Except Roland Garros last year, I've found his last clay winning streak in the database, dating back to 2001, where he made two rounds of 16 in the clay Masters:
Rome TMS, Italy
Tennis Masters Series, 7-May-01, O, Clay , Draw: 64
R64 Pioline, Cedric (FRA) 6-3 6-0
R32 Enqvist, Thomas (SWE) 7-6(4) 4-6 6-3
R16 Levy, Harel (ISR) 2-6 4-6
_____________
Hamburg TMS, Germany
Tennis Masters Series, 14-May-01, O, Clay , Draw: 64
R64 Pavel, Andrei (ROM) 6-4 6-4
R32 Martin, Todd (USA) 6-3 7-5
R16 Santoro, Fabrice (FRA) 3-6 3-6
I wouldn't mind if he did that this year again or even better
And about the mystery and his ranking: Even though Hewitt didn't play this time last year and therefore has not to defend any points in the 52-week ranking system, he will lose points because after Monte Carlo the sixth optional event will fall out of the ranking system again. So yes, CURRENTLY Kiwi is ranked #10 in the entry system after defeating Llodra today

But this could change again when others closely behind him, for example David Ferrer, do well this week by getting a better result to overtake him - which would not be the most unlikely thing to happen.
Anyway, if top 10 or not, it's all nice... but the most important thing would be that he is top 7 at the end of the season and that he would be 100% guaranteed a spot for the Masters Cup
