Default ESPN hires Jason Goodall as temporary replacement of Johnny-Mac?

Why was Johnny Mac only doing the TV work at Aus Open for ESPN for only a few days? Why did he leave Australia early?

I hope Jason Goodall can make regular appearance on ESPN... he did a great job overall.

Johnny Mac is the most popular and best commentator but often his schedule conflicts with doing the commentary. he randomly disappears a lot depending on each slam

If that's the case then good for ESPN.

They might find it strange to have a commentator who is aware of the existence of players beyond the top15 or so.

oh please, Johnny Mac is very knowledgeable of top 100 players. I will admit from time to time its obvious he unfamiliar with lower ranked ones but still. even if Mac is not the most knowledgeable current commentator on the planet he has a great voice and is not so boring to listen to

his brother Patrick is a fabulous one as well

Goodall could never replace J-Mac. He actually watches and analyzes the matches, doesn't love to hear himself talk, and is occasionally funny. If ESPN wants someone to replace J-Mac, they ought to hire Mary Carillo back.

[Kidding about that last part. Please, for the love of god, let TV networks stop giving Mary Carillo work]

I sure hope Goodall will still do the Masters. He is terrific.

Goodall is one of the best commentators in tennis, easily top 5. He's knowledgable, respectful and passionate towards the game. I love his commentary. Shame I don't have espn though.

I am absolutely tired of listening to Jason explain how a player brings his racquet face over the top of the ball to thus generate enough spin to provide the right amount downward trajectory on the ball so that it lands just inside the baseline and bounces high enough to force the opposing player to hit a backhand outside of his comfort zone.

J-Mac is vastly more entertaining.

Jason Goodall is intelligent, attractive, and overall cute in my opinion. John Mac is an old drunk and a bum.

I think you are confusing Jason with Mary Joe and John Mac with Cliff.

Yes I noticed that this week too, great addition by ESPN.

But if you gonna hire Goodall you have to get Koenig also. It is like Abbott with no Costello. Seinfeld with no George. Kobe with no Shaq, Lebron with no D-Wade, its good, but not the best it can be.

I sure hope so, McEnroe may provide colorful commentary but he is incredibly clueless.

I guess JMac has a clone because the JMac I've been listening to is one of the most uninformed commentators ever. He knows nothing about the players of today unless he has a direct connection to them, blathers on and on about when he played, and rarely, very rarely, discusses the match he's commentating. Tennis Twitter was going in on JMac about his nonsense from day 1 of the AO and then he was gone.

I'm not a big fan of Goodall but he honed his craft working with the great Robby Koenig. Yes he will talk about how the players are playing. He will discuss why they are playing a particular style and can talk about why a player's tactics aren't working against his opponent. He doesn't chatter away during a point either.

I hope Koenig never signs on with ESPN. Look how they've dumbed down Darren Cahill.

Koenig IS commentating for AO. Maybe not with ESPN though.
