Bozoljac broke his finger and is not likely to play against Switzerland.

Default Re: World Group Play-Offs (September 22-24, 2006)

Spain v Italy. How unlucky for us with this draw, but I must always hope.

On clay in Spain we will get absolutely trounced I feel, look at the difference in the sides.

Spain:

Rafael Nadal - world ranked number 2 - 11 davis cup matches played, won 6 - 7 played on clay, won 5

Thomas Robredo - ranked 7 - 10 davis cup matches played, won 3 - 5 on clay, won 2

David Ferrer - ranked 15 - played 2 davis cup matches, won 1

Fernando Verdasco - ranked 29 - played 3 davis cup matches, won 1

Italy:

Filippo Volandri - ranked 38 - Played 14, won 8 matches - played 12 on clay and won 8 of them.

Andreas Seppi - ranked 69 - Played 9, won 6 - played 8 on clay and won 5

Daniele Bracciali - ranked 65 - played 7, won 5 - played 5 on clay and won 3

Giorgio Galimberti - ranked 245 *but used for doubles) - played 14, won 9 - Played 10 on clay and won 6.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Expected matches

Nadal v Seppi
Robredo v Volandri

Verdasco/Ferrer v Bracciali/Galimberti

Nadal v Volandri
Robredo v Seppi

-----------------------------------------------

We should win at least the doubles I feel. Bracciali and Galimberti is an experienced team who have won their last 4 doubles matches in the Davis Cup against Spain, Morocco and Luxembourg twice.

Then we must try to beat Robredo on the first day. Italy needs a huge performance from Volandri on that first day and then if we go into the last match at 2-2, we could only hope Seppi pushes whoever he plays against whether it is Robredo or Ferrer.

In the end though, we must expect the lost, I think we can only win the doubles at best.

Last year Italy v Spain at the same stage.

An awesome first rubber which saw Seppi surprise Ferrero after going two sets down

R1 - A.SEPPI (ITA) def. J.FERRERO (ESP)
5-7 3-6 6-0 6-3 6-2

Then a mismatch on clay as Nadal battered Bracciali to even the scores on the first day

R2 - R.NADAL (ESP) def. D.BRACCIALI (ITA)
6-3 6-2 6-1

Then a great doubles performance from the Italian team. Another thrilling rubber in this tie.

R3 - D.BRACCIALI / G.GALIMBERTI (ITA) def. F.LOPEZ / R.NADAL (ESP)
4-6 6-4 6-2 4-6 9-7

Nadal then clawed it back to 2-2, with a victory over Seppi, who gave some scare to Spain in this match

R4 - R.NADAL (ESP) def. A.SEPPI (ITA)
6-1 6-2 5-7 6-4

It all came down to Ferrero v Bracciali... another match on clay that Bracciali can not compete. If Volandri was here, maybe it could have been a different story.

R5 - J.FERRERO (ESP) def. D.BRACCIALI (ITA)
6-3 6-0 6-3
