Marco Chiudinelli provided the first major upset of the third day of men's qualifying at Australian Open 2009 today, knocking out 19th seed Karol Beck of Slovakia.
The Swiss player, ranked more than 400 places behind his opponent, won the match in straight sets, 6-4 7-6(6).
The 26-year-old Beck, a comparative veteran having played in 13 grand slams to Chiudinelli’s two, rallied in the second set after having his serve broken twice in the first.
When the Swiss broke in the fifth game of the second, it looked as though the set might go the same way as the previous one, but Beck broke back in the next game to level the scores at 3-3.
The rest of the set went on serve to force a tie-break. Beck squandered a 4-1 lead in the tie-breaker, and a solid return from Chiudinelli secured the upset win.
Chiudinelli faces a tough third round match against Dominik Hrbaty, who has already had victories over the likes of James Blake and Marat Safin at the Hopman Cup this month.
The winner of the match will take one of the 16 qualifier spots of the main draw of Australian Open 2009.

But Hrbaty is set to make a big come-back this season, I think. He'll probably have been way too solid for Marco.

Marco lost 2-6 4-6 to Olivier Rochus in 1R of Heilbronn Not good. He needs to win matches at tourneys where he uses his PR, so that he can climb the rankings.
