Like I said in my earlier post, Fed is ultra-competitive so like it or not, he will take Miami very seriously. I just wish he would use this big stage to experiment more with his game. Sampras was always #1 at the end of the year (and that is what counts) even if he would concede it to someone else briefly during the year and that is something Fed, I hope, realizes soon.

I can't ever see Roger willingly conceeding the #1 spot during the year. He just cares too much. And I think he loves everything that goes along with being #1. Sampras was never as dominant week in and week out as Roger is but I think he plain didn't care. He cared about the Slams and ending the year at #1. As long as Roger stays healthy and the motivation is there I can't see him turning into Sampras. The only real similarity I see is him knowing when he can play at 75% and still win and when he needs to raise his level and play ninja style tennis.

i dont understand why people think he needs to tank miami? He already had a nice rest after ausopen. his matches in IW werent particularly taxing except against rochus.

He has more than enough time to play well in miami, and then go to monte carlo. Everyone will be making the transition at the same time. Nadal, gaudio etc. So i dont think roger has to take extra time to work on his clay game. His game is fine, now he just has to execute his tactics.

last year he had the right game plan but did not execute, this year watch out.

I think we will see a much more determined federer this year. He has said he is preparing mentally for RG already!!!!! And rochey is coming early just for the clay season. Watch out!

Tony was with him in IW, so I'm guessing he'll be in Miami too and stick around probably till afte Wimbledon when Roger usually takes a long break. You're right, three of his matches in IW lasted no more than an hour or so and the final against Blake wasn't that taxing either. Every tournament he plays his mindset is he's there to win the tournament as it should be. There's no point in showing up if you have no intention of trying to win the tournament.

the reason people think he should tank Miami is 'cuz he won IW & wants to win Paris. And don't forget 'cuz after winning IW & Miami b2b last yr. he wiped out his feet w/serious plantar fasciitis. In fact, IW was the best I've seen him move since Houston in '04.

Further, even if we take a wildly optimistic best-case scenario & say he wins Miami & Paris, the pressure would be exhausting, and almost certainly adversely affect him @Wimby. Better to go back to Europe, stop home & rest for a few days, be under no direct mental pressure for a few extra weeks, hire a clay court practice partner perhaps (Tony can't run anymore tho I heard his strokes are still exc.) & get extra time in practicing on clay. (I even thght. it would make sense for him to go down to Latin America this winter & play a few of those. Sure they may have easy draws, but I think his chances for winning Paris increase if he spends Feb-June on clay, w/only a quick break for IW. Then he's thinking of clay, exclusively.)

Also, read Mats bit from Inside Tennis recently in which he said Roger needs to practice on the stuff for at least a month first. If he takes Miami seriously, he's going to be sufficiently tired when he gets to Europe, that by the time he's rested he won't have a month of good preparation.

But, those of you w/the poinnts argument are persuasive. It just significantly dents his chances @Paris, imho.

His clay schedule is the same as last year so the answer is yes.

Of course, he could pull out of/tank M-C. Is he playing Rome?

I don't think Roger will be physically tired if he wins Miami - he is more likely to be mentally tired and I hope he has enough motivation to get through the gruelling clay season leading up to Paris so that he is well prepared (mentally and physically) to give it his all at the FO.

That's my point, Rofe - he may be mentally tired - and if he gives his all in Paris, how the hell will he win Wimby. I fear that by not going out early, after maybe a round or two - so there is Zero Mental Pressure - such that he'd only lose some points - he's risking the far more points rich Wimby by giving his all in Paris.

Right, my bad!
I wish your scenario was the correct one. If that was the case, Miami wouldn't matter at all this year and Federer probably WOULD skip it.

I totally agree. Without this competiteveness and the determination to win every single match and tournament he plays he would not be where he is now. Behind his friendly gentleman-like behaviour (or on top of it) Roger is deadly ambitious. That is at least my humble opinion. I like this attitude. Being nice (what ever he says about it ) only will not bring you to the very top.

BTW: Can one anyone remember if Roger ever withdrew during a match or pulled out of a tourney when it had already begun?
