Marcos Baghdatis returns to the Indianapolis Tennis Championships in the starring role of crowd pleaser after the Wimbledon-induced hip flexor injury absence of American idol Andy Roddick.

The popular Cypriot was last seen being stretchered off court in the Netherlands after an injury. But it will be a good time to start afresh as the 1996 Australian Open finalist makes his second trip to the event.

His only other appearance was in 2005, when he won a round and was then beaten by Dane Kenneth Carlsen. Less than six months later, Baghdatis was playing the match of his life as he faced Roger Federer for the Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

Baghdatis missed eight months of 2008 with injury, and then hurt his knee last month, missing Wimbledon.

"I don't care, losing or winning, I want to win, but I just want to feel happy on court. I want to find my personality on court which I lost because of my injuries will take time, but I'll fight. I'll wait until it comes," said the determined Cypriot.

The No. 148 plays first against American Wayne Odesnik.

Roddick's ill-fated bid for a third title in the Midwest sank as coach Larry Stefanki made the painful call to organizers of the opening event of the US Open Series.

Stefanki offered no clues as to when his man might be ready to action - the Open starts in just six weeks. But the three-time Wimbledon finalist against Federer is taking his time in finding his feet after the devastating loss at the All England club.

Roddick had complained of his hip problem after his dramatic defeat two weeks ago.

It's the second post-Wimbledon no-show for Austin-based Roddick, who also opted out with disastrous results of the US Davis Cup quarter-final this month in Croatia.

Roddick has given no indication of when he will be mentally and physically to re-joining the tennis wars, with the Indianapolis event marking the start run-up Open, which begins August 31.

Robby Ginepri now takes a place in the 32-man main draw, with the 2005 champion hoping to find some form after a bout of appendicitis early in 2009.

Top seed Dmitry Tursunov is no stranger to the Indy tennis weekends, lifting the title in 2007 and falling in the final a year ago to Frenchman Gilles Simon.

No. 24 Tursunov has been inactive since losing in the Wimbledon opening round to German Mischa Zverev. After missing Russia's Davis Cup defeat in Israel, he starts his hardcourt summer against Michael Berrer of Germany.

Israeli surprise packet Dudi Sela led his side over the Russian in Tel Aviv. But it will be back down to earth for the 24-year-old No. 30 when the second seed starts his Midwest campaign against wily Floridian Vince Spadea.

Californian Sam Querrey grabs the third seeding ahead of of Russian Igor Kunitysn and Germany's Benjamin Becker, who played his college tennis in the US.

VANCOUVER — He was once No. 8 in the world, but his current ranking has slipped to No. 136.

A hero back home in Cyprus and one of the most popular players on the pro tour, Marcos Baghdatis is an example of how things can shift quickly in the topsy turvy world of the professional net game. Making both the final of the Australian Open — where he lost to Roger Federer — and the semifinal of Wimbledon in 2006 propelled Baghdatis to his career high.

As recently as the end of 2007 he was still ranked in the top 20. However, last year back and knee injuries sent his ranking plummeting to the point where he now finds himself on the comeback trail.

Players of Baghdatis’ talent would normally give events like the Odlum Brown Vancouver Open, with a combined men’s and women’s purse of $175,000 US, a pass. But after winning just one match in his last two events on the main ATP Tour — at stops in Indianapolis and Los Angeles — events like the one at the Hollyburn Country Club begin to look like attractive alternatives.

“I’m here because my ranking is not so good right now and it’s been a while since I’ve played through a whole week,” Baghdatis explained. “But that’s not the only reason I’m here. I’m good friends with Dudi Sela — a two-time Van Open champion — and he told me this was a great place to play. It’s beautiful here. So green. Not like home where it is a bit too dry.”

One of the reasons Baghdatis is so confident of a successful comeback is his age.

The former world No. 1-ranked junior is still only 24. Even in the youth-obsessed tennis world that’s plenty young enough to be thinking maybe his best tennis is yet to come.

“I definitely have the tennis (game) to come back,” he insists. “If I work hard it will come.”

A native of Limassol, Cyprus, where he still makes his home, Baghdatis isn’t sure why he’s a fan favourite. Perhaps it’s as simple as the fact people connect easily with somebody who obviously enjoys what he does.

“I love to play tennis, so I smile a lot when I’m on the court,” says the No. 3 seed. “I have fun on the court. Maybe people just like to see happy people.”

WEST VANCOUVER — The top men’s seeds are falling at the $175,000 US Odlum Brown VanOpen but the top attraction is still alive.

Former world No. 8 and Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis won his first-round match 6-4, 6-2 Tuesday night over 18-year-old American Devin Britton, the youngest ever NCAA men’s singles champion.

Monday night, the No. 1-seed Rajeev Ram lost, and Tuesday the Nos. 2 and 4 seeds fell. Baghdatis is seeded third, as his world ranking has dipped to 136 during an injury-plagued two years.

“It’s not very easy to play against somebody you don’t know and he has nothing to lose, he’s just going for a lot of shots,” said Baghdatis. “So I’m pretty happy I found a way to win. I came here to win matches, not to play good, so I’m happy I’m winning. That’s what I want to feel again and I’ll try to do it the whole week here.”

Baghdatis faced a break point up 5-4 in the first but won the set with three straight solid first serves, including an ace.

In the second set, he broke Britton — an Ole Miss freshman-turned-pro — to go ahead 2-1 and really showed his class in the next three games, jumping out to a 5-1 lead.

In that sixth game, Baghdatis brought a sold-out crowd of around 2,000 to its feet with a series of alternating drop volleys and lobs that had Britton on the run. Britton made a great leaping backhand overhead to stay in the point, but Baghdatis made a pair of reaction volleys to finish it off.

Dubois, Baghdatis crowned at VanOpen

By Marc Weber 08-10-2009 COMMENTS(0) Making a Racket

Sania Mirza was going for the Canadian hat trick on Sunday. Stephanie Dubois played goalie.
Dubois did what countrywomen Rebecca Marino and Sharon Fichman weren’t quite able to at the $75,000 US Odlum Brown VanOpen, stopping India’s top player by scores of 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 for her seventh career International Tennis Federation title.
“I think that the other Canadians tired her a little bit, they had a really good match, [both] of them,” said Dubois, a 22-year-old from Laval, Que. who, at No. 129, is Canada’s top-ranked player behind Aleksandra Wozniak.
“I came back and the third set was so close, it could have been either way, but I think I finished strong.”
In the final of the men’s $100,000 event, overwhelming crowd favourite Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, the third seed, beat unseeded Xavier Malisse of Belgium 6-4, 6-4 in a battle of former top-20 players.
Top seed Mirza had to go the distance in her previous two matches, including a quarterfinal win over Vancouver’s Marino that ended close to midnight on Friday. The final wasn’t a work of art, with both players struggling mightily to hold serve, but second-seeded Dubois had more fight in her at the end.
After blowing three break points to go up 3-0 in the third, Dubois capitalized on her fifth break point at 4-all. On match point, she let out a high-pitched scream and leaped into the air after Mirza’s shot sailed out.
Dubois last won an ITF title (one step below the main WTA Tour) in July of 2007, just before coming to Vancouver. That year she dropped the VanOpen final to Great Britain’s Anne Keothavong, and Dubois said after Sunday’s victory that she’d thought hard about joining the row of winner’s photographs that hang on the grounds. She did win doubles here in 2007.
“I was visualizing to have my picture on the wall over there,” said Dubois, a career-best No. 95 who had the crowd firmly behind her. “I’ve been working hard lately. I think it’s just mentally I’m more strong and more calm. I’m really focusing at the moment.
“It’s a big tournament and it’s great to win in my country,” she said.
Dubois earned $11,400 for the win, while Mirza, ranked 83rd in the world and trying to make it back into the top 30, took home $6,080.
Baghdatis, who added some serious star power to this year’s VanOpen — all the ball kids swarmed him after the final, begging for any article of clothing — could have taken a wild card into the $1.4 million Legg Mason Classic in Washington instead of coming to Vancouver.
He said at the outset that he was here to win matches, not necessarily play well. The former world No. 8 did both in the final, albeit against an under-the-weather Malisse, who was playing his 10th match in 12 days after winning the $50,000 Granby Challenger in Quebec.
“It’s been a long time [since] winning a tournament and having the feeling of winning something,” said Baghdatis, who last won a title in January, 2007 and is a close friend of last year’s VanOpen winner Dudi Sela of Israel. “It’s very nice, especially also in the final I played really good, so the tennis is coming back and I’m really happy.”
Like Mirza, Baghdatis is coming back from injury and his ranking has slipped to 136. He said he won’t play qualies at the U.S. Open and will instead return to Cyprus to train for two weeks.
He earned $14,400 for the win, while Malisse walked off with $8,480.
All the players heaped praise on the tournament that started off as a $25,000 women’s only event at the Jericho Tennis Club in 2002. Both Mirza and Baghdatis said they hoped to come back one day when it was a full-fledged tour event.
"I've never seen a Challenger played at such a nice club," remarked Malisse.
