Maybe they do a little bit, but I think most players would tell you that they'd rather be consistently playing well and winning matches - because obviously if that's happening their ranking will go up, AND it means they're playing well and progressing. I really really doubt they go to the ATP site and look at how many points they defended or anything like that.

If i would be a professional sportsman, i would definately go to the sites and check everythink! your ranking is very important for the draws...

exactly.. you can't run and you can't hide from it 
but if tommy wil win Houston for example.. then it's important for him to know if it did something to his ranking.. because then maybe he is sure of not facing federer in an early round already! (do you know what i mean?)

last year he was defeated in the quaters by Melzer  so he only has to defend 8 points

yes, but 2005 sucked so much, that he can make a great jump in the rankings, because he won close to nothing that year
