They have the guts to ask insulting questions because they remain anonymous in the transcripts. I would like to see the ATP include the press members' names and credentials and list them before each question is asked (for instance, instead of "Q:" we see "Bud Collins, Boston Globe:"). That way the person who asks the dumb question will be held accountable.

Nole and Rafa have the best pressers in regards to each other. My very favorite was the one at the French in 2006 when djokobitch said he was in control of a match he was losing. THe look on Raf's face was PRICELESS.

What was his answer to that?

Well, that's the sort of question he loves because he gets to talk about how there are so many unbelievable players blah blah and how he must try his best keep improve. There's a link to a video of the presser in rafa's forum.

Re: Stupid Journalist Questions at Press Conferences
......
Yes, I have to admit that Chinese journalists do make stupid stupid questions. We've already heard a lot this week. And unfortunately there will be more.
This week I spent a lot of time in the interview room, taking photos. I really felt shame at some questions pulled by our journalists...but what can I do?
We really have some problems in our education. Those young guys study English, but they don't know how to communicate with people, even though some of them may get good points at tests like TOFEL. And the bigger problem is that they don't know how to respect others. They don't need to have guts to ask insulting questions, simply because they don't know those questions are insulting at all.

Exactly.
Here is an eloquent example:
Quote:
TENNIS MASTERS CUP
November 11, 2007
Richard Gasquet
SHANGHAI, CHINA
Q. What do you think about the punishment for betting, nine months without playing? Do you think that's fair for the players?
RICHARD GASQUET: Spanish tennis is incredible. They are better than French guys now, yeah. A lot of Spanish player won Roland Garros. Ferrero, Moya, Nadal. It's incredible for Spanish tennis. We are working. We are trying to play like them.
|
As for the comment about him looking for a chinese girl, I guess it was a poor attempt to be funny. Even in french he often flops... so imagine in english...

Q: Who is the girl watching your match with your uncle?
RICHARD GASQUET: Not my girl. I don't know. Not my girl, for sure. No, no, no, I have just friends. Men friends, but I'm not gay.

I hope you were just joking. You'd be amazed at what happens when the lights are on you, and what a person feels compelled to say under intense fire from people who don't know a thing about who you really are.

Well, I think he rather didn't want to comment about the betting incident and just answered a (none-exitstent) question to get across the point, without responding with the "No comment!"-answer.
Either that or they screwd up with the transscript.

Please. After all the fuss over the gay affairs rumours, he's bound to be determined to be unambiguous when he says anything that could lead to those kinds of assumptions. Doesn't mean anything.

It sounds a bit far-fetched. Could have been an error with the transcript? It happens.
If it wasn't then...
