What you have to realize is that most taxi drivers in Washington are from Africa or the Middle East. Which makes this even funnier.

Labadze is so so funny. If he was a stand up comedian I'd be the 1st person to buy the DVD. A true legend

The man is a huge laugh and yes that above scenario would definitely make things more interesting.

Q. Did he say anything to you afterwards?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: No. Just shake my hand; nothing else.

Q. Do you believe that you are able to beat the other top guys now?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Well, I beat twice already Michael Stich.

Q. So you have a lot of confidence against the top guys?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Yeah. I didn't feel any pressure, you know. I played Sampras when it was like, I don't know, 15,000 people at Melbourne, so --

Q. Did you notice all the fuss that was going on beside the court with Brooke Shields?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Excuse me?

Q. No, you didn't then.

Q. Do you know who Brooke Shields is?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: No.

Q. You have never seen Brooke Shields in a movie?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: No.

Q. She is a movie star?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Probably Andre's girlfriend, yeah?

Q. What are you doing if you are not practicing?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Everyday I am going to casino. You know, I am gambling.

Q. I saw you there.

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Yeah.

Q. Is your hometown on the coast?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Yeah.

Q. How big a part of your prize money have you spent in casino?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I spent, let us say, I don't know, 10% of my whole prize money which is I made this week.

Q. You are not 21.

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I am 20, but in that place Loews I am allowed to go there, but on the other place, I have to show my ID. Once I went with Andre Medvedev, and everybody knows him, of course, because he is, let us say, superstar, but nobody ask him for ID, but everybody was asking my ID. I showed them my passport and.

Q. You are older?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Yeah, six months older than him, but they didn't throw me in, into casino, because I am 20.

Q. How do you feel because everybody says that you could even win this tournament? Do you have the feeling?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Who is saying that?

Q. Me.

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Did you bet on that?

Q. I may do it.

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Actually, I am not thinking like you think. I don't feel I can win this tournament.

Q. You have to play Stich. You beat him four times; correct?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I won 4 out of 5 matches against Michael.

Q. How do you explain it?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Well, ask Michael. He can explain to you everything. I don't know. By the way, did you speak with him?

Q. You say that you feel fine. How do you feel about the Davis Cup match against Germany coming in Moscow?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I am here in New York.

Q. I just want to know if you --

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I am not really thinking about Davis Cup now. I am thinking about U.S. Open.

Q. Please tell me if you are going to play or not. I asked you in Dusseldorf and Paris for sure you shouldn't play.

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Excuse me.

Q. You said in Dusseldorf and Paris that you shouldn't play that much if it was moved to Moscow. I just want to know your reaction about it. You were very --

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Everybody knows that answer.

Q. You were very outspoken there and I hope you are as much outspoken here.

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I answered that questions already at Wimbledon. I told them I am going to play. That is it.

Q. What is the reason you changed your mind?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I just don't want to answer that questions to you.

Q. Could you talk a little bit about the feeling among the players, about how this tournament shapes up with Andre Agassi as No. 1 and--

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I think it is really helpful that for tennis that Andre stayed on the top because, you know, most of the spectators they do like him. Most of them come just to watch Andre and the competition between Pete and Andre, it is just great for the tennis.

Q. Is that a big challenge for you for someone like you?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: For the game, that is for sure. Not many people know who Kafelnikov is. I really hope after this tournament everybody will know here in America.

Q. Do you have the impression that here in the states it is all focused on Sampras and Agassi?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Yeah, that is kind of disappointment. Because all the press they are writing everyday about Agassi and Sampras, but besides them there is so many players who can really beat them like myself, I beat Andre twice and so many like Becker, they never say anything about Becker or Ivanisevic or somebody else. They just really focusing on Agassi and Sampras. I think that is wrong.

UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION

1995 U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Flushing Meadows, New York

September 2, 1995

V. SPADEA/Y. Kafelnikov

6-2, 6-4, 6-4

AN INTERVIEW WITH YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV

Q. What was wrong today?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Nothing.

Q. Nothing?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Nothing.

Q. You were supposed to win?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Huh?

Q. You were supposed to win?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Well, supposed to doesn't mean that I'm going to win, you know. I think, in my opinion, Vince play pretty good tennis and, you know, basically I didn't have any chance to beat him. He was all over my game, and he was dominating all three sets. This just happened. It was a bad day maybe for me that I didn't play my best tennis.

Q. And it was something about the lights or night match?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Yeah, it was my first match here in the U.S. Open Stadium Court, and this year I didn't play not five minutes on the Stadium Court, I didn't have any chances so -- and I found the court was much faster than the others. It took me, you know, one-and-a-half sets to feel the atmosphere, to feel the court, to feel the new surroundings.

Q. What did you know about him?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: We played one month ago. I beat him, but it was on clay court. I always beat him.

Q. Is there a possibility that you underestimated him at beating him so recently?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I knew that it's going to be difficult match for me, and as I said, you know, this is maybe the bad day for me, you know. I cannot play good tennis, you know, every match here in this Open. You just happen, you know, I never played on a stadium so far this year. It was the first match. Maybe, you know, I had difficulty to see the ball, to feel the atmosphere, you know.

Q. Have you played in this stadium before?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I played last year, but not this year.

Q. Have you ever --

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I didn't even have the chance to practice not five minutes on the Stadium Court.

Q. Are you angry?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: No, I'm not angry. I'm very satisfied. Why should I be angry?

Q. That he --

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Maybe it was my fault, not their fault. I cannot blame them because -- just because I didn't have any chances to hit in the center court. It was definitely my fault.

Q. What was it about his game that was so difficult for you tonight? Did anything surprise you?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: His groundstrokes was more solid than mine. And I thought he served pretty well. You know, he was dominating all three sets. You know, I never had a chance to put pressure on him because he was trying to, you know, to rush me all the time and everything. His game was working pretty well.

Q. Was it difficult playing an American in a night match in a U.S. Open like tonight?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: I played last year night match. Yeah, I guess Stich, I lost. Same story happened here, I played again night match and again I went down. Maybe it's just -- I really don't know what's happened.

Q. But playing an American out there, does that even make it worse?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: Yeah, it was a little bit bothering me. I thought I had some bad calls against me and, you know, I just couldn't do anything and that was that. And of course, all the people was staying behind him, they was supporting him. I'm No. 7 seed, he's nobody. And of course they wanted him to beat me.

Q. You seemed to have a lot of trouble with getting your serve in?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: As I said, the light was really bothering me, I think. You know, first two round match I played at 11 o'clock in the morning, so -- when the light was perfect and everything, but today I really had some difficulties to feel the court, to feel the atmosphere and all. Playing on court 16, it's very big difference to play on the Stadium Court.

Q. Is this the most disappointing loss in your pro career do you think?

YEVGENY KAFELNIKOV: No. To be honest, I'm not disappointed, I'm really happy. Seriously, to be honest, I'm happy that -- not very happy, but, you know -- how to explain to you? You know, I had a great summer here in the U.S. Open, maybe I got a little bit tired because I played singles and doubles every tournament. It's just -- just didn't work out well. And, of course, you know, I'm going to have three weeks off so I can recover and prepare for the indoor season. That's basically my favorite surface, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Q. You have to go back on court after such an emotional win for them, the crowd is all excited, then you go out and have to play, is that tough?

STEFAN KOUBEK: It's not tough at all. I mean, I was watching Jurgen's match and I was really getting excited after he won the first two sets. And I was looking forward to the match and then after losing in five sets, of course it's tough to go out there, but still it's -- I was trying to have as much fun out there as possible, and I was playing good tennis, and didn't happen for me.

Q. Is it intimidating facing Roddick's serve?

STEFAN KOUBEK: Of course, I mean, if a guy serves like him it's not funny, and especially when your close to break him a few times and he always ace you, it's getting kind of annoying and, I don't know, it's not fun.

Q. You may be the only person who has actually faced a 150 mile per hour serve, how does it feel?

STEFAN KOUBEK: It was -- I was pleased that I didn't return it because I hit it on the racket and couldn't make it in, so I was actually mad about it. But I might make the book of records now because I played against him, did something.

Q. How much of a surprise is this? I mean, you've never really done that well on the hard courts.

DAVID FERRER: I'm very surprised. I played well in Hamburg, but I wasn't expecting to do so well in one of the Masters.

I'm very happy.

Q. Hamburg was clay, right? :retard:

Way to go jounalists. Hey Roger, plese, be self-absorbed. We need a headline... and also, tell us where you're going. We need free pictures.

Q. How much do you feel the players feel your presence right now according to your records lately?

ROGER FEDERER: You have to ask them. Don't ask me (smiling).

Q. You don't think about that?

ROGER FEDERER: I don't think about it, no.

Q. Jim Courier used to go in the locker room when he was at his best and he could feel people looking at him because they feared him.

ROGER FEDERER: Well... I feel they're looking at me, too, you know, but I don't know if it's fear (laughing).

Q. What else would it be?

ROGER FEDERER: I don't know. Ask them what it is (laughing).

Q. Are you going to South Beach tonight?

ROGER FEDERER: Who knows? Yeah, I might.

Q. Where are you going to go (laughter)?

ROGER FEDERER: What, are you sending the paparazzis by or what (laughing)? No, no, no, I might be there, but I might be somewhere else as well. Yeah, it's a good place to be.

Q. Coming into this match, did you take a look at the tape of Safin defeating Federer at the Australian Open to pick up some tips, maybe see how he hit his backhand down the line to take Federer out of his comfort zone?

ANDRE AGASSI: Well, no matter how much I watch that tape, I won't be able to wake up 6'5", serving 140 miles an hour, and crushing backhands that, you know, would be above my head up the line.

So the answer is no, I did not watch the tape.

[...]

. Do you have a favorite for the final on Sunday?

ANDRE AGASSI: Let's see...

You know, I'm from Vegas so I don't mind taking some chances. I'm going to go on a limb and I'm going to say the person who's 46‑1, 47‑1 over the last six, seven months, is the favorite.

[...]

On a lighter note, you've made a lot of fashion statements in your time. What do you think of the clam‑diggers?

ANDRE AGASSI: What is that?

Q. The pants Nadal is wearing.

ANDRE AGASSI: The not‑pants, not‑shorts look (smiling)?

I like them on some people, I just won't say who.

the technical name is "pirates"

Q. Your style is very similar to that of Labadze . Safin had a tough match against him. Do you believe this means it's going to be good for you?

CYRIL SAULNIER: Yes, but I never considered I was similar to Labadze .

But, anyway, each week all of us are trying to do our best. I will try to be competitive. Safin played well in Australia . After that, he had some difficulties, but it's not very much.
