Becuse he wants to improve his game on other surfaces. He is already one of the best players in the world on clay, but realistically you need to win big matches on ALL surfaces (especially hard courts) to remain in the Top 10 and be taken seriously as a contender in the big tournaments. Three out of the four Grand Slam events, and 6 out of 9 Masters' Series are on fast courts, so he feels he needs to practice. It will be hard for him (Coria did it last year and failed miserably), - but I personally think it is good that he wants to move forward and develop, and if he loses early in the tournamrnt, then at least he tried

I agree with you Rosie it would have been the easy option for him to go on to South American clay but like Nadal he is willing to take a few early loses to improve his game.
Eurosport 2 will be showing 1 match a day plus the semi & final.

Really! I didn't know that. Sadly I won't be around all week as I have to go into Hospital on Tuesday but should be out by Friday, so David better make it through til then

It is a tough draw but don't forget he made it to the QFs of both Madrid and Paris last year. 
 Is he playing doubles? I ought to check the draw.
 Fergie, glad you understand. It just wouldn't have made any sense to play on clay in SA and then have DC in Belarus on carpet the next week.
