Default Davis Cup thread: South Africa vs Germany (4-6 March)

I thought it would be a good idea to start up a Davis Cup thread. So how optimistic are we feeling about the South Africans next weekend?
Also, who would you pick to play?

I think Germany should win this pretty handily. But on the other hand, they could go walkabout mentally
If I were Patrik Kühnen, I would have Kiwi and Haas playing the opening singles. For doubles Waske for sure, partnered with either Tommy or Rainer. With Rainer's current low confidence and match practice, I would keep him for the dead rubber (assuming that Germany has already won 3-0 or 3-1 ).

What are your opinions?

Default Re: Davis Cup thread

Tommy should be a complete banker - you can't can let him out... even when he had ongoing back problems he has beaten almost all opponents (except Mirnyi one time) he "had to beat". And playing against South Africa, he won't get a #15 of the world. So he should get the trust for sure.

Kiwi very much underachieved in indoor season. I hope that doesn't mean he has lost his complete indoor strength. He is normally strong there and likes the kind of game. I don't have too much trust in him playing yet, his Davis Cup record is still poor. But neither do I have more confidence in Rainer.

Doubles with Haas and Waske should remain. I would also like to see Schüttler/Kiefer. Basically I think they could try a lot, if they don't "oaf around" (sorry for this Safin fans expression *g*) they shouldn't rely on doubles anyway. But normally I don't see too much sense trying something new with Waske/Schüttler or Waske/Kiefer or Kiefer/Haas. But as I said, they should be able to afford it in this tie because I hope it's not going to end 3-2 or 2-3 but more convincing.

A dead rubber... Waske playing singles would be nice

I just hope they don't do any silly stuff there. As we all know, Davis Cup is said to have its own laws (like national Cup matches in soccer when amateur teams upset pro teams ), especially since it will be an away game.

Ferreira offered his help to play and he is on four man team. Not sure if they really let him play, South Africa should look into this with long view prospect. What's going to happen if Ferreira can help them this week? Next tie they are again all on themselves alone and will face an at least equally strong opponent.

Germany, just slam the fucking door 3-0 after the 2nd day and make it easier for yourselves! Then we don't have to sweat it out.

Default Re: Davis Cup thread

For me, it's clear that Haas + Kiefer will play singles and Waske/Schuettler doubles. There's no way for them to lose a singles match, so that they should win 4-1 or 5-0

But I don't like Waske being in the team. I could understand it, if he were top20 or top10 in doubles, but I don't see any proof that he is better than the three others in doubles. But to split the olympic team just because of him is not necessary imo.
And his perfect record in DC is a blockade for Kühnen to throw him out of the team.
I also don't understand the reason he was nominated for last year. Kühnen said Waske qualified for DC, because he won 3 challenger titles in doubles. How many titles do you think would a Haas/Kiefer team win, if they played challenger all weeks?

But okay, my opinion on the game is: Germany will win 4-1 and will get a nice home game in September.

btw It was always my opinion that Haas/Kiefer should have the most potential in doubles, but the chance for that team is 0%.

He was nominated last year because there was no one else than him. In April: Mayer was completely unprooved, Burgsmüller did win nothing, Kohlschreiber a nobody usw.

I think Kühnen is looking for that: 3 singles player + doubles specialist
that why he is nominating: Kiefer, Schüttler, Haas, Waske and not Kiefer, Schüttler, Haas, Mayer/Kohlschreiber

JMG, I really don't know how you can doubt Waske's doubles talent. He didn't reach the SF of the Australian Open (beating some top doubles combos along the way) just by fluke. Plus in his last DC doubles with Tommy Haas, he was the better player and was a great motivator for Haas to improve his game.

I'd say Haas en Kiwi for the singles matches, and Rainer and Alex to play the doubles (which is probably the hottest doubles pair alive! )

I hope that we don't get to hear any things like "the ball bounce was so strange", "the balls were too light", "I couldn't hit the ball properly" because Johannesburg has an extreme altitude, about 1700 to 1800 meters

I can already hear it

It looks like they (DSF) won't show the 3rd singles match on Sunday? At least, if the information on www.daviscup.com is true(that play starts at 11am). From 11-13 they have the soccer talk.

Well, according to DSF's website (http://www.sport1.de/coremedia/gener...iere/Main.html), it will be broadcasting live on all three days.
