Default Andre at Masters Cup

Here's a thread for Andre's run in Houston next week!

I've been thinking, many of the top players seemed pretty worn out at in Paris last week. Andre's time off could be a blessing in disguise. He will be fresh!!!

I just hope he does better than last year, lol!

A win would be great -- he hasn't won the Year-End Championships since 1990, though he has been runner-up a couple of times.

GO ANDRE!!!

from the ATP's website:

Will the Stars Align for Andre?

It has been some time since Andre Agassi capped one of his remarkable years on the ATP circuit by winning the Tennis Masters Cup, but as the 33-year-old American arrives in Houston this year, he will be hoping it's ‘lucky 13' for him in more ways than one.

Not only has Agassi qualified for his 13th year-end Championships, it also has been 13 years since he last won the ATP Tour World Championships in Frankfurt. And, just for those who believe numbers have a significant influence on our lives – the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston also will be Agassi's 13 th tournament of the year.

While it's usually a number people of a superstitious nature tend to avoid, Agassi never has been one to go by the norm. Constantly finding ways to re-write the record books, the Las Vegas native pushed the limits even further in 2003, winning his eighth Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, claiming a record 16 th Tennis Masters Series shield in Miami – where he won for a unprecedented sixth time – and becoming the oldest player to reach No. 1 in the ATP Entry Ranking after winning the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston in April.

Having won four titles in the first four months of the year, Agassi made his best start to an ATP season, going 23-2 heading into Roland Garros, where it took an inspired performance by rising Argentine star Guillermo Coria in the quarterfinals to halt Agassi's charge for a second championship in Paris.

Even Agassi was powerless to stop Mark Philippoussis' barrage of 46 aces during their epic fourth round battle at Wimbledon, and Juan Carlos Ferrero produced a performance worthy of his new No. 1 status to defeat Agassi in the semifinals at Flushing Meadows.

Earlier this year, during the semifinals of the Stella Artois Championships at Queen's Club, London, Agassi returned Andy Roddick's record-equaling serve clocked at 149 MPH. “I guess that's a record as well then,” Agassi commented afterwards with a flash of his famous smile.
The birth of his and wife Stephanie Graf's baby daughter Jaz Elle on October 3 could also inspire Agassi, who last claimed the year-end Championship in 1990 when he defeated Stefan Edberg in Germany. While Agassi has been runner-up to long-time rival Pete Sampras in 1999 and to Gustavo Kuerten in Lisbon in 2000 since then, the title has proved elusive. As Agassi arrives in Houston, it might just be lucky 13 this year.

Andre's group has been posted:

Ferrero
Agassi
Federer
Nalbandian

Ouch!

Andre can beat all of these guys, but this is far from the ideal draw for him!

Not too good of a draw for Andre. Hope he does well!

Do you realize that Andre is 6 years older than Moya and Schuettler, and at least TEN (10!!!) years older than all the others!? He's twelve years older than the youngest ones.

We always hear about his age, but that seems to put it in perspective! wow

When Andre turned pro, Coria and Nalbandian were 4 years old.

You would root for Agassi.

Does that answer your question?

Exactly... which is why I'd be ok with Andre winning LOL!!

Speaking of Andre and Andy.... I bought a copy of their Queens Club match today, I should get it next week (it wasn't too much money or I'd never consider it lol).... I can't wait to see Andre return the 149mph serve !!!!!!!!!!!

Tough group, but Andre will be ready. I got a good feeling about this tounament this yr, dunno why! I wouldnt mind seeing an Agassi-Roddick final but there can only be one winner

You're right about his age Mister Q. That is why what Andre is doing now is even more remarkable. Andre

from the ATP website:

Agassi Does his Homework for Houston

Andre Agassi rates conditions at the Westside Tennis Club, venue for the Tennis Masters Cup, as "somewhere in between the Australian Open and US Open. The ball takes the spin and kick of topspin (like the Australian Open) but on a slice it also stays a little low, which is similar to the US Open."

Agassi is attempting to win his second year-end championship title, 13 years after he won the ATP World Championships in Frankfurt in 1990. Agassi was drawn into the tough Blue Group, which also features fellow 2003 Grand Slam champions Juan Carlos Ferrero and Roger Federer and gritty Argentine David Nalbandian.

On Monday Agassi's first match is against Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, the player most likely to emerge as the game's next superstar, according to Agassi. "Federer is a guy with a lot of potential," Agasis said. "He’s had a great year. More people are talking about him as the player of the future more than anyone else."

Agassi, 33, also said that he is not contemplating retirement anytime soon. Asked when he would hang up his racquet, he said: "When I wake up in the morning and I can’t tie my shoelaces, then I'll now it’s time to quit.

"But really for me it’s about when I play my best tennis, can I win. Tennis has given me so many opportunities and more importantly has given me the chance to focus on raising my kids when I’m finished."
