The audience doesn't watch much more because there aren't many great players.
The ATP isn't getting much better. Top players are always injured and satisfied with the bad way they're playing. This certainly is not the 1980-1995 era anymore.

I loved watching some Borg, Lendl, Steffi, Graf and the old 2001-2003 Andy, but that had nothing to do with nationality.

During the US Open series, Andre and Andy were the only big names to play, internationally or otherwise. Injuries and time-off after Wimbledon kept Europeans, etc. away. It is not soley ESPN's responsibility to promote them, they need to play in the US leading up to the Open as well.
