on Andy's site you can write a 'match report' and they pick their favorite every month and give you a prize. they have another one for photos from when you met him and they pick the best one. I wrote up a summary after the Davis Cup on a whim when I was really bored in about 15 minutes and apparently it won lol

RANT:
Points don't prove the whole
year's story of who should be #1.
We could say: If Andy hadn't lost a set in AO quarters due to an atrocious BAD call, he could've
stormed to the title -hmm revenge is sweet next year
*evil snicker*
*vomit at Agassi
getting such an easy draw again*
The wrist injury in AO made him miss 1 month!

I saw a clip of him destroying an ankle in Delray-
lost a bunch of points there.
Indian Wells was
disappointing 'cuz he's too good to lose in the quarters, playing tired again.

The fact is he won 6 titles, should've been more
this year, but of course he never gets enough respect.

I don't know about you, but I could see him win
Wimbledon & reach quarters or better in RG.
I watched him enough
to predict it.

Tall doesn't mean high rank.

Andy does get respect, but of course he has detractors too...everywhere. People are mostly bickering cuz he's hailed (or at least, was) the next Agassi or Sampras. While he did win a slam so a lot of hype can be arguably warranted. One slam still does not a "Agassi" or "Sampras" make. lol

There are other players around his age that have achieved more then Andy, and yet they don't get the same hype. So I can at least see why some people are annoyed by Andy. They shouldn't hate of course...but we're all human.

END RANT

I meant Hanescu played really well. He's hardly played outside challengers. At #76, he should be around 70 (above Ferrer, Burgsmuller) if he plays more.
St. Petersburg -barely lost in tie-breaks vs. Kuerten
Lapentti -pushed Nic Lapentti to DC 5 sets
Nieminen - pushed Nieminen to FO 5 sets

Agassi & Sampras's results are known for more
than a decade. I know Andy's not going to go down to #140 in a few years or decide to retire at 31. As long as he's still hungry, he'll win slams.
It'll be more satisfying because mens tennis has way more depth than when Andre & Pete were Andy's age. The reason it's doubtful if Andy would
do much is people judge quickly about him without
knowing how he develops. It's easy to say:
that guy won 1 or 2 slams--that means he'll be more successful than
the others.
We can't predict anything 'cuz
many were so sure that Safin & Moya would have
multiple slams by now. Hewitt was supposed to
dominate, but he didn't when the younger players
matured. 2 slams, 0 slams now -it doesn't matter unless
you can win slams in the next several years.

Sampras didn't win many
clay titles & Agassi won only 1 grass title- Wimbly & not until he was 22 & failed to win previous
slam finals.
To me, Andy doesn't look too bad even with his rollercoaster ride.

I think Andy has accomplished as much or more than any other player his age and experience on the tour.

Roger gets plenty of hype in Switzerland. The papers there are full of him all the time. In Shanghai last year, there was a reporter with him who reported even his strolls down the street. I think that Ferrero also gets a lot of hype. I remember when he first came on the scene. Right away, he was predicted as the next great thing. His results didn't bear out the predictions right away, but clearly they were correct. All three of these guys deserve a lot of "hype" if hype means press and attention. I don't think either of them is going to be the next Agassi or Sampras (thank god for that because I don't like either of them) but that doesn't mean they aren't going to be the cream of the crop for the next few years.

I don't notice a lot of press over Roddick in Switzerland. I don't follow the Spanish press, but I would bet there's not a lot in those papers about him either.

I think there's a reason for Andy's hype and it doesn't have a whole lot to do with his tennis. He has a PERSONALITY. He's funny, he makes fun of himself and others, he has an enjoyable personality and there's a bit of an enigma there because it's clear that he's a different person off-court than on. He's just plain likeable, and the fact that he's a great tennis player who excites people just adds icing on the cake.

When people call him the "next Sampras or Agassi" I don't think they're referring to it in "tennis achievement terms" - I think they're referring to it as "we need him for US tennis like what Pete and Andre did for it" - that's different. No one's saying he's gonna do what Pete or Andre did in terms of TENNIS (aka winning titles and majors and whatever) but in terms of being a personality that draws Americans to tennis, Andy is the next one. People are brought to tennis because of him and even if he never wins another major or whatever, he will still have that ability to do that, IMO

Good points and I pretty much agree with all of them. Except I think that people called him the "next Sampras or Agassi" on BOTH his ability to draw people to tennis AND in terms of tennis achievements. Andy won back to back titles during his rookie year in the season...taking down some big names in the process. He also won a hard court tourney and made the QF of USO, losing in a tight 5-setter to the eventual champ. That is remarkable for a first full year player as a pro. I guess I can see justification in the hype then. He certainly didn't live up to expectations during his sophomore year. He had a great year this year, but it is only "on par" to what is originally expected of him, going at the rate of his first year achievements.

And of course I'm not raggin on Andy. I just like a healthy discussion/debate.

But really, it may not seem so right away...but Andy is actually going at an "achievement" pace faster than Agassi or Sampras (in different respects). Andy has won 10 titles faster than any other player in open history (relative to joining the pro ATP-level tour), with the exception of Agassi (Agassi=entered 63 tournaments before winning his 10th title). Sampras didn't reach the same title count until later. Andy also has a "heads up" on Agassi in that he has won his first major sooner than him relative to age and time on tour. (Agassi won in his 18th slam appearance...Andy won in his 12th).
