Es frecuente ver a quinceañeras en sus fiestas entregar cada una de las velitas a 15 personas especiales, que las acompañaron en su vida. Sin desmerecer el gesto, parece armado, como esos festejos de gol que se preparan toda la semana. Las dedicatorias surgen espontáneas, en el momento. Juan Mónaco, al ser consultado por Olé minutos después de lograr su primer título en la Copa Telmex, reconoció lo justo y necesario: a su equipo de trabajo, a su familia, a sus amigos y... a Mariano Zabaleta, "mi espejo, mi consejero Nº 1", según Pico. Desde Acapulco, el Negro charló con este diario sobre la alegría que le produjo la gran semana de Mónaco.

—¿Sabías que Pico te dedicó el título y dijo que eras su espejo?

—Sí, me puse muy contento cuando me enteré. A Juancito lo conozco desde que tiene 10 años. Aún me acuerdo cuando me pedía entradas para los torneos. El vivía en Barcelona y me iba a ver al Conde de Godó.

—Ahora te pide consejos.

—Sí, le di un par, siempre trato de ayudarlo. Igual no fue en esta semana nomás. Charlamos todos los días, de todo un poco.

—¿Seguiste el partido por internet o por TV?

—En realidad no lo pude ver, estaba entrenándome. Pero no bien terminé, me prendí a internet y lo seguí.

—¿Te sorprende el nivel que está mostrando?

—El siempre jugó bien y le pegó muy fuerte. Ahora cambió su juego, su actitud y, sobre todo, se lo nota más maduro. A todos nos ha pasado, llega un momento en el que lo que venís practicando te sale.

—¿Cómo lo van a festejar cuando llegue Pico?

—Supongo que con tranquilidad, tenemos que jugar mañana (por hoy). Pero el miércoles seguro organizamos algo: por el título y porque es mi cumpleaños.

—¡Cómo está Tandil! Pico, Del Potro, vos...

—Sí, tremendo. Una máquina de sacar jugadores. También están Diego Junqueira y Máximo González.

—¿Cuál es el secreto?

—Que se labura. No sé si más que en otros lados, pero se trabaja a full y con gente muy capacitada.

—Podrían armar un equipo de Copa Davis...

—Sí, seríamos el Principado de Tandil. Y yo no sólo jugaría, además sería capitán.

Mariano Zabaleta se despidió en primera ronda del US Open. El tandilense cayó frente al alemán Philip Kohlschreiber por 6-2, 6-2 y 6-4 en el cuarto y último Grand Slam de la temporada de tenis.

El partido arrancó muy favorable a Kohlschreiber. Tras resignar el primer game del partido, el alemán encontró solidez en su devolución y aprovechó la inconsistencia del servicio de Zabaleta para ganar cinco juegos consecutivos y ponerse 5-1 arriba. El argentino conservó su saque en el game siguiente y a continuación se puso 0-30, pero arriesgó de más y cometió unos costosos errores no forzados que inclinaron la balanza a favor del europeo: 6-2.

La historia en el segundo set fue calcada. Zabaleta mantuvo su saque en el juego inicial, pero Kohlschreiber tuvo otra ráfaga tremenda y rápidamente quedó con ventaja de 5 a 1. El tandilense no pudo revertir el marcador (6-2) y quedó obligado a ganar los tres sets restantes para pasar de ronda.

Tras un inicio de set parejo, Kohlschreiber logró quebrar en el quinto game. El argentino reaccionó en el juego siguiente y niveló nuevamente el marcador, pero volvió a ceder su saque en el noveno game. Tuvo tres chances de quiebre Zabaleta con el marcador 4-5 y no las pudo aprovechar. Así, el alemán se quedó con el set por 6-4 y con el pase a segunda ronda.

Siete argentinos siguen en carrera en el torneo. En segunda ronda, Nalbandian enfrentará al belga Malisse, Cañas hará lo propio con el coreano Lee, mientras que Mónaco chocará con el israelí Sela. Además, Calleri se medirá con el australiano Hewitt, Del Potro con el austriaco Melzer, Chela con el estadounidense Odesnik y Acasuso con otro local, Roddick.

Combativo, aunque en la cancha se mostró algo fastidiado por una derecha que pocas veces pudo utilizar con efectividad, al final no estaba sorprendido ni con bronca por el resultado. "Es el primer torneo que juego sobre cemento. No lo hice antes porque en algún momento tenía que descansar, entonces vine directamente a jugar acá. De alguna manera era lógico que pasara esto", dijo el tandilense.

De todas formas, cuando la temporada está por comenzar su tramo final, Zabaleta se mostró contento por cómo se le dieron las cosas. Tras numerosas lesiones, cuando merodeaba el puesto 200 del ranking y parecía que ya no volvería a este tipo de certámenes, consiguió los resultados que tanto había buscado y se volvió a meter entre los 100 mejores. "Estoy contento porque logré lo que quería, que era volver a jugar en el nivel ATP y estar en los torneos grandes. Me había anotado en Tokio, pero no sé bien qué voy a hacer. Me vuelvo a Buenos Aires y ahí veré. Quizás vaya a Bucarest y luego juegue la gira indoor", contó Zabaleta, apreciado por el público local y que, como coterráneo de Juan Mónaco, contó con el apoyo en las tribunas de Luisana Lopilato, la novia de Pico.

La jornada de hoy marcará el comienzo de la actividad en la 2da rueda para los argentinos. Empezando por Guillermo Cañas, 14° favorito, que se medirá en el segundo turno de la cancha N° 11 con el coreano Hyung Taik Lee. Si bien el tenista nacido en Tapiales tiene metas altas en el certamen, en principio apuntará a superar su mejor actuación aquí, la tercera rueda alcanzada en 2004. Y José Acasuso estrenará el estadio Arthur Ashe para los argentinos: se medirá en el 3er turno nada menos que contra el local Andy Roddick, 5to favorito, en el último turno de la noche.

I was in Argentina in January and I had to buy a magazine for someone in this forum, unfortunately, the one with Mariano was not there anymore, but I found the next issue. In it, unfortunately, not a lot of stuff about Mariano, but someone wrote to the newspaper about him and I found the letter very nice. So, I scanned it, there's also a little picture.
