What a fight from Kiwi, saving 2 MPs in the third set.
But honestly, it was an ugly match, both players played really bad, hardly hit winners, just wait for the opponents to make errors. Maybe the windy condition was one of the factor. Kiwi's match had cost me watching lots of other matches that I was planning to watch
First set: Kiwi played well until the 10th game, he had a few opportunities to get the break points, but just couldn't take the opportunities. He held his serves pretty easily (and the contrary for Paradorn) until the 11th game when Kiwi lost his serve (I guess he lost a bit of concentration there). Break back straight after that (thanks to Paradorn's double faults and bad serve). From this point, Kiwi started questioning call after call, argue with the umpires, intimidated the lines judgemen, and it really cost him the first set as he seems to lose his focus here. Down early in the tiebreak, got the mini break back, but made an unforced error on his own serve. Overall, Kiwi should take this set easily if he focussed better and took the opportunities, but he just let them slipped away
Second set: Paradorn played a bit better now, hit several winners (esp. the backhand winners). Both players struggled to hold serve, Kiwi had so many opportunities here (not because he was playing great, but because of Paradorn's errors after errors), but couldn't make the best of it, and his serves really let him down. Somehow, he didn't serve that fast today, and not many aces as well. He seemed to not hit the ball too hard, and up to this point, it's Paradorn controlling the match. Kiwi still argued a lots about calls (that he thought was wrong, but I think the linesman did a great job, it's just Kiwi imagining things
). A couple of games in this set, kiwi was up 40-15 on his serve, but somehow manage to lost the serves
Same as first set, Kiwi should have won this set.
Third set: I missed the first 2 games (which Kiwi lost), and he got the warning from the umpire in the second game of this set. I thought Kiwi would have given up at this point, but it seems that the warning from the umpire somehow calmed Kiwi down, and he started not to argue much and focus more on his game. He was still struggling to hold serve (again, his serves let him down), lots of game went to deuce and thankfully he still won it. On the tenth game of third set, Kiwi faced 2 match points (not consecutively) and he saved both of them with great play, and I guess this was the turning point for Kiwi, and he played a much better and cleaner game from here on. Paradorn still played pretty good in the tiebreak and was up early on. Kiwi somehow fought back to win the tie break (thanks to Paradorn bad first serve). Funny enough, while the first two sets, Kiwi should have won it, in this set, Paradorn was the one played better but Kiwi won it
Fourth set: Paradorn broke early, but Kiwi had gained his confidence back and started playing better. He started hitting big serves, good groundstrokes and less error. After down 1-4, Paradorn seemed to just let the set go and not really playing good.
Fifth set: Paradorn played a bit better than the fourth set, but Kiwi had been unstoppable and cruised to a comfortable 5-0 lead. He then lost the next 2 games and finally close the match at 6-2
One funny thing happening in this set when the score was 4-0, Kiwi got a point penalty from the umpire. I wasn't so sure for what reason, but I guess one of the lineswoman reported to the umpire that Kiwi tried to harrass/intimidate her by doing something (something to do with his private part). I was so funny seeing Kiwi arguing with the umpire and call the referee to the court and "holding up" his pants trying to explain something. I couldn't hear their conversation and since the accident was in the other side of the court from where I sat, I wasn't so sure what happened there. Is it just me or it's one of Kiwi's habit to making some funny stuff with his "private part"? I remember this also happens last year when he lost to Rochus.
Some notes about today's match:
* Kiwi wasn't playing good at all, his movement is still quite slow. I hope it's not because of the injury. Hope he will play much better next round
* Thankfully, Paradorn just recovered from an injury too, hence he wasn't playing his best as well today, otherwise Kiwi would have lost in straight set
* I don't quite like his new Diadora shirt, it's too tight for him. However Paradon's shirt is even tighter
His next round should be easier, hope he can make the best of it.
Sorry I didn't take any photos today because I didn't sit in the front and my camera' s zoom is not too good.
