(thanks irish...)

(Interview before l'open de moselle)

Ça me manque.
«Aujourd'hui, je me trouve meilleur.

ummm...in english it's better I guess ( thanks Irish !!)

Arnaud Clément, how did you approach the season indoor which has just started?

"While being very motivated, I began my season late because of my injury (note: wrist) and I took a little bit of time before finding the right level. I was relatively consistent throughout the season but, on the other hand, I did not do many very exciting things and, even if I played well for example on grass, these results were not in connection with the objectives that I had fixed for myself. It is because of that, that I approached this last stretch being very motivated. I wanted to do something big and I believed in it, because my play is adapted perfectly to the conditions which one finds here ". -

Lyon often made a success of you. Are you glad to play this tournament?

"Yes, of course! Lyon will always be special for me since it is, to date, the only title that I have won! But if I like to come to Lyon, it is not solely for this reason. Lyon, it is a fantastic place where there is always a magical environment, where the French people are always reliable. It is very exciting and motivating to play under these conditions. And also, I do not hide that I am proud to see my name being reproduced on the banners, beside those of prestigious players like Sampras, for example ". -

Do you wait impatiently for this season to bring another title?

"Yes, it is clear. I miss that. Without being pretentious, I am conscious of the level of play that I can develop and I think I really have the capacity to win tournaments. Then, it is true, it seems, badly so that my number remains blocked. And then, I acknowledge that I want to relive that particular feeling of the moment when the trophy is raised when one has just win a title ". -

You have had a rather odd season, with many second round losses and some big matches, in particular against Hewitt in Hamburg. One has really the impression that you enjoy these great appointments...

"It is true that I multiplied the matches lost in the second round, these kind of meetings which can open beautiful prospects if they are won. I do not miss big things... ". -

You reach a stage, where you think that these matches should be won...

"Absolutely. And I acknowledge that it was relatively frustrating to be stopped in middle of week after having often played well ". -

How did you cope with your forfit, the day before of the finale of the Davis Cup 2002, and the four months of inactivity which followed?

"To declare forfit was hard, but logical. Then, this injury was not obvious to manage because I hadn't been injured in a long time. But it is relative, because I was not isolated from the courts as long a time as Dip ((note: Arnaud Di Pasquale, operated on a slipped disc) or Jerome Golmard and it really made me become aware at that point that I adore what I do ". -

What brings Remi Barbarin to you, who did not have any experience as a coach when he became your trainer?

"When we decided to make this experiment with us three, with Remi and Dip, I did not say to myself that I took this opportunity because he was my buddy. For me, Remi is somebody who has enormous knowledge on the level of the physical preparation and, today, tennis is very hard physically. Knowing that I cannot play if I am not well physically, I needed his help enormously. And I am not disappointed, because Remi is, in this field, very very strong. Then, he has the BE2 nevertheless, mixed with very many players to the CNE and learned much at the time of the Davis Cup campaigns (note: Remi Barbarin previously was the physiotherapist of the French team). Then, certainly, he did not know what life was like on the circuit, but he adapted very quickly and, today, he knows me very well. Our collaboration was not obvious at the beginning, because we both have a very strong character. But we bring a lot out of each other today, everything is going very well ". -

How do you want to evolve your play?

"I think that it is very very complete. Even if I am obviously in need of perfecting in very many fields, I can well to play on all surfaces, but with limits - it is difficult when one can approximately do everything, it is choosing the right shots at the right time. When one has a stereotyped play, one does not question it. Me, my play is perhaps sometimes a little too traditional and it would undoubtedly be necessary that I find a little madness which I lack. While keeping, obviously, the important aspects... ". -

On the other hand, there is a very broad pallet of shots which you have in your possession, which very seriously complicates the task of your adversaries...

"It is clear. I think that when I am in form and that my play is good, from there I can be dangerous against many types of players. When I am well, there is not a player who frightens me ". -

You have previously been in the top 10. Do you think you are able to return?

"Today, I am better. My level is higher than that of the previous years and the goal is to be as stable as possible throughout the season to pass through the rounds more easily from time to time. Then, to answer your question, I do not see why I could not return to the top 10... ". -

Is there a depression surrounding the Davis Cup from here?

"Yes, there is a slight depression... There are discussions which must take place between certain players and the captain. There are things that happened, that I do not support at all, that I do not find well, and I spoke to the protagonists about it. What disturbs me, is I think that the depression is not that deep. The small variations that there are do not make common sense and I think that it can all be very quickly sorted, with the proviso of not exposing it to the whole world. It would be a pity not to sort it out... ".

A few.....inspirational words from the boys....

Mathieu: "My physical condition let me down today. I had difficulty in adjusting my footwork. He didn't give me any chances to get back into the match. This is my fifth straight week. My arm is hurting a little bit, particularly when serving. I am thinking about taking a week off before Paris. I am planning to play Basel and Paris. Barky has always been my main objective of the year."

"My month of September was more or less my year right there. It gave me the chance to win some matches at last. It also meant that I managed to cut my losses, because at one point I was wondering if I would be ranked at 200 at the end of the year. It has been frustrating because I was so impatient to play a full season in 2003."

Right now, I am raveling without a coach. I think I am one of the very few French players who could work with a foreign coach, probably because of my time spent in the US, and I would appreciate the different approach it would bring."

************

Grosjean: "I first twisted my ankle in Tokyo during my quarterfinal match. I was able to carry on playing then. I came here expecting to be match fit, but the ankle was just getting worse. I actually injured the ankle two years ago and tore two ligaments. Ever since, I’ve had to be really cautious with my ankle.”

“I will try to play Madrid if I can, but hopefully I will be able to play St. Petersburg to defend my title. It’s a real disappointment not to do better here. I always find it special to play well.”

************

"I need to get used to surface here. I was well concentrated during the match and I know that it's tough to play the exact same level from one week to the next."

"Once you get into the quarterfinals, it's always possible to win a tournament. So tomorrow will be a big match. These last few tournaments are huge for me because I only had three really good results this year."

About Vicente
"He's someone to take seriously and can be dangerous, even on this surface which might not be his best.”
