Tennis Anti-doping Programme launches off-season initiative

The ITF has launched a whereabouts initiative requiring certain athletes to provide daily whereabouts information in order to permit effective no-notice out-of-competition testing during the off-season.

The ‘Whereabouts Pool’ has been designated as the top 30 men and women by ranking as of 12 September, the ranking achieved after the US Open; and the top five men, women and quads on the wheelchair tennis tour by ranking of 10 October, the ranking achieved after the Wheelchair US Open.

The designated players will be required to state where they will be for at least one hour during each day between 21 November and 31 December. This will make the out-of-competition testing much more effective as Doping Control Officers should be able to accurately locate players for no-notice testing, providing an enhanced deterrent to doping. A repeated failure to file information or to be available for testing at the location(s) and times(s)submitted may result in a sanction of a ban between three and 12 months for a first offence and up to two years for second and subsequent offences.

While it is only players in the “Whereabouts Pool” that have to file whereabouts information, all players playing on the ATP or WTA Tour or on the ITF Circuit remain subject at all times to testing under the ITF Tennis Anti-Doping Programme, both in and out of competition.

In other anti-doping news, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is holding an international symposium on genedoping at Karolisnka Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, on 4-5 December 2005. Two press conferences will be held in connection with the symposium, on Saturday 3 December and Monday 5 December, and more details can be found at www.wada-ama.org.

I assume the players don't have to give the location(s) they will be at for all those days before the time period starts. I can just see the amount of faxes they will be receiving from players who take last minute trips, etc. piling up.

Seriously though, drug testing does not take an hour.

I thought the NFL did something similar for their off-season testing (but a quick google didn't pull anything back). As weird and 'Big Brother' as it sounds, I suppose this is the direction many professional sporting authorities are taking. I think they're worried that some drugs will clear the system and that a 'firm' approach might scare someone off.

Not really sure if I'm for it or against it but I'm glad to see them experiment with something to keep the sport as clean as possible. It's not all the players, so I suppose that's not exactly fair, but sometimes, the big boys gotta step up and take the heat.

I'm sure Lleyton will be thrilled when the doping control doctor comes up to him with a piss tube as he is watching his wife give birth in the hospital.

Nadal tells DPA that anti-doping tests visited him on Saturday morning when he was still asleep, his 16th or 17th test of the year. He added that anti-doping measures treat athletes "like criminals" and perhaps politicians should be subjected to the same treatment in order to be on the same footing. Nadal said he accepts the anti-doping controls but feels they are "exaggerated" and perhaps athletes should not have allowed things to come this far.

This is totally uncalled for.

I can't believe the players will put up with this sh*t.

Then the entire ITF office staff will volunteer to go get a sample from that player.

that would make a great job description
"every week you get to fly into an exotic location somewhere in the world, to meet a top tennis player privately"

the downside is, you will have to take guard of a biological sample on the return trip to civilisation....

Perhaps Nadal should get his colleagues to not dope. If they were all not doping, they wouldn't need testing. but there are always one or two (or more) that are going to get away with it, so this is what they have to do.

It's not like tennis or sports are the only places where the measures are drastic. Lots of places treat potential cheating like they're guilty. In law school we can't even go to the bathroom unless we sign out, and we had to fight like hell to be able to have a bottle of water at our feet during the exams (which are sometimes as long as 4 hours.)

These guys make millions, I have no sympathy for them if they get woken up once in a while to make sure they're playing fair.

Actually, right now, I have no sympathy for anyone, so I think it's best I just apologize and shut down my computer

Here are some articles in Spanish with Nadal´s quotes. I can´t translate it right now, but, he doesn´t complain just because they woke him up and when he spoke about making doping tests to politicians was replying to something he was told about (summarizing, ¿unvoluntary doping test? done by Italian tv show 'Le Hiene' to 50 congressmen..., some of them tested positive in cannabis and cocaine) by the interviewer.
