He looked good against Soderling today, nice serve and volley! Also had some oppotunities on Robin's serve, but was a bit unlucky - 6:7;6:7, pity he loses so often in such close matches...

Nevermind, 2nd round in Marseille - that's another 25 points, and his level of game is good at the start of the year

Challenger de Cherbourg (28 février - 6 mars). Son fameux match record (11 h 05 de jeu !) à Wimbledon, en juillet, lui a fait prendre conscience qu'il pouvait faire encore de grandes choses sur le circuit. Depuis, il démarre presque une deuxième carrière.


Nicolas, vous venez de réintégrer le top 100 mondial. C'est un peu le bout du tunnel ?

C'est vrai que je suis assez régulier depuis quelques mois : j'ai gagné le Challenger d'Orléans cet automne, derrière à Bercy, je perds 7-6 au troisième set contre Gasquet Je me suis qualifié à l'Open d'Australie en perdant au 2e tour, je fais 7-6,7-6 à Marseille contre Soderling, je gagne Courmayeur... Je sens que mon niveau moyen s'élève. Mais tout cela est le résultat d'un long processus. La saison dernière a été chargée émotionnellement mais j'ai pu aussi me reconstruire un physique de joueur de tennis, sans blessure, en repartant pratiquement de zéro. Cela m'a permis de me réentraîner, de rejouer normalement. Ça a été le premier déclic. Gagner à Cherbourg, par exemple, l'année dernière, m'a quand même bien lancé dans ma saison.

Et puis, il y a eu Wimbledon en juillet. Quand vous parlez de « charge émotionnelle », vous faites allusion à ce fameux match contre Isner et ses 11 h 05 de jeu ?

Oui, ce qui m'est arrivé là-bas, m'a fait prendre conscience que j'avais encore de belles choses à vivre dans le tennis. Ça m'a donné confiance et surtout, j'ai pu mesurer que j'avais ma place sur le circuit.

Vous pensiez vraiment que vous n'aviez plus votre place sur le circuit ?

Je sortais d'une saison 2009 noire avec des blessures (déchirure deltoïde, douleurs au coude, inflammation au pied) qui m'ont tenu éloigné du circuit pendant plusieurs mois.

C'est comme ça que vous avez plongé au classement ?

Oui, quand je suis revenu à Cherbourg l'année dernière, je devais être 220e mondial (il était n° 40 en 2008). Mais la route est longue. Il faut retravailler, prendre le temps. Mais je suis sur la bonne voie, j'ai réintégré un groupe d'entraînement à la Fédération (avec Florent Serra, Arnaud Clément, Adrian Mannarino). J'ai confiance dans mon nouvel entourage, dans la façon dont je travaille. Depuis Bercy, en accord avec la Fédération, je bénéficie aussi des conseils de Nicolas Escudé (le capitaine de Fed Cup). On a prévu de se revoir pour aborder la saison sur terre battue et sur herbe.

On a le sentiment, en vous écoutant, que vous partez presque pour une deuxième carrière ?

J'ai 29 ans et je ne sais pas combien de temps il me reste à jouer. Il y a un peu plus d'un an, je me suis posé la question d'arrêter. Là, j'ai l'impression que si mon corps me laisse tranquille, j'ai encore de belles années. Mais je ne m'emballe pas. J'ai gagné Cherbourg l'année dernière, j'ai 90 points à défendre. Ce qui veut dire que si je perds cette semaine, je quitterai le top 100.

Que pensez-vous justement de votre tableau à Cherbourg. Vous n'êtes pas dans la partie la plus difficile ?

Ce que je peux dire, c'est que j'évite certains bons joueurs non tête de série dans les premiers tours. Mais l'erreur à ne pas commettre serait de se projeter sur un hypothétique quart ou demi-finale.

Est-ce que sur le circuit, le regard des autres joueurs a changé depuis votre match à Wimbledon ?

Je semble avoir gagné le respect des meilleurs. Je ressens une forme de reconnaissance. Il y a des marques d'attention et j'ai senti que j'avais plus ma place dans les vestiaires. Avec Isner, on a réalisé quelque chose qui sortait du commun. Je crois que j'ai gagné le respect.

Que pensez-vous d'un joueur comme Grigor Dimitrov ?

Je pense qu'à Cherbourg, il faut se dépêcher d'aller le voir jouer cette année car on ne le reverra pas dans ce tournoi. Je suis convaincu de son potentiel : il a tout pour aller très haut s'il arrive à exploiter toutes ses qualités. Ce sera un très grand joueur.
