Court Report: Monfils Mania
By James Martin

Gael Monfils is the game's next superstar. How do I know this? I watched his match today on the Grandstand against Michael Russell with four young kids, who took part in the greatest of Open traditions – they snuck down into the press seats to get a better view. Next to me was Tim, 11, and next to him was his friend (his name escapes me), 12. The other two couldn't have been more than 14.

All were dressed alike: baseball caps (Duke representing), tennis shirts, tennis shorts, and tennis shoes (Babolat being the preferred brand of
footwear). I asked Tim what he liked about Monfils. "His energy and passion," he said.

I agree. Monfils is an electric if erratic player, all arms and legs. Calling his movement awkward would be kind. And watching him slide on the hard courts, it's clear that he's an ankle injury waiting to happen.

But he is passionate.

During his match against the American Russell, who has no weapons to speak of, Monfils hit some huge forehands down the line before pumping himself (and the crowd) up. Good stuff. But even the way he does the double fist-pump is strange. It looks as if Monfils is trying to escape a swarm of killer bees, pumping and twirling all at once.

Late in the fourth set, with Monfils up two sets to one, Tim said, "Feels like five." The momentum and emotion swings were suggesting it would go the distance. Russell, the consummate counter-puncher, was frustrating Monfils. And for all his talent, Monfils seemed to be wilting. After virtually every point, he bent down to his knees, trying to get a breather. Then again, he looks that way after the first point, let alone one late in a fourth set breaker.

Monfils' mental game needs to be sharpened too. He can play some of the loosest points you'll ever see, missing the ball – badly.

But after Monfils went up 3-0 in the breaker, Tim and his cronies were emboldened. Tim predicted it was over, the result a fait accompli. He added (in a nice way) that I better be ready to get out of his way so he could motor down to the court for Monfils' autograph.

Monfils won, of course, and I politely allowed the gang to pass. They were joined by dozens of other kids looking for some ink from the gangly Frenchman.

Superstar in the making? Could be.

The guy reporting hasn't seen anything! He should have been in Paris or Plaisir last year lol... It was a popularity contest and Gaël won each time...

I was so sad when he couldn't play in Bercy MS last year because that's where the atmosphere is the hottest for him... He's at home. He's the Parisian banlieusard hero lol...

Monfils se sépare de Champion
13/09/2006 - 10:48

Gaël has decided to stop being coached by Thierry Champion. We don't know, yet who will replace him.

I understand he wants to try something different, but I liked Champion too. They looked like a good team to me in RG.
No news about his new trainer yet, just a statement of Champion who sounds disappointed:
(eurosport.fr)
"Gael told me 2 days ago that he wanted to stop. I was kind of surprised because that's absolutely not what he'd been saying so far. I think that 2 years is a little bit short."

Some news in L'Équipe today:

http://www.lequipe.fr/Tennis/20060919_074721Dev.html

He is injured and must rest 2 more weeks. It's a problem with the foot and he must be careful to avoid a stress fracture.
He might be back for the tournament in Moscow (9th oct.)
No news about his new trainer, but Benhabiles or Pierre Gautier are in talk.

From a French forum, I don't have the source of the article, sorry:

It's still just a rumour, but he will probably be coached by Gauthier who was Grosjean's coach in 2001 (Seb's best year).

(I'm not completely sure, but I think he also was/is? the coach of the great Jean-René Lisnard.)

Tennis - Monfils : Pier Gauthier à l'essai

He is going to work with Pier Gauthier during 1 1/2 months (a "test period").
Gael says he wanted to change something in his career, to listen to other things. It was a difficult decision for him to part ways with Thierry because he's learned his job with him. But maybe he wasn't receptive enough to what Champion was telling him at the end. He needed a new "boost" to stay on top.
He talked with different coaches, Benhabiles among others, before choosing Gauthier (because he liked what he said and he seems extremely motivated).
He denied that he is going to move and live in the South of France.
Gauthier is 34 years old and was the coach of Seb and JR Lisnard.
Gael wants to change a few things in his game, he must be more agressive from the baseline.
He also split with Barbarin and doesn't have any physical trainer at the moment.
He will probably come back in Moscow and he will decide after Bercy if he continues working with Gauthier.

Since I don't know Pier Gauthier (except that he was Seb's coach and friend), I googled his name. He is specialized in NLP (neuro-linguistic programmation), whatever that means. He also coaches managers, he's not only a tennis coach. He is a former tennis player (his best ranking was around #200 in the nineties). But it definitely looks to me like he works more on the mental side of the game. I hope they'll find the right balance with the technical aspects because Gael needs to improve in that regard too.

I've got the Gael forum all for myself?
Quote:

http://www.tenniszoom.com/interview/monfils_2006.html

He took this decision after his defeat at the US Open. He needed a new challenge. He stresses that he left Thierry only for professional reasons (changes in his game) and not for personal reasons.
About his new coach: the "feeling" with him is good. He doesn't want a coach who always agrees with him, he needs a "persuasive" coach because he is a complex guy and a "rogue"! His coach has to be "smarter" than he is. Pier is going to have fun with him! (That's what he says, not a personal comment from me.)
His main goal for this year is to be in good shape for Bercy. He wants to be on top before his home crowd.
He will shorten his vacation to prepare properly the next season and says it won't harm to work a lot this winter.

Quote:

http://www.sport365.fr/tennis/atp/ar...allenge-.shtml

Most of the things are not new, so here are just the few new points:
- he admires Benhabiles a lot and says "why not work with him in the future too?"
- the points he wants to improve in his game with his new coach: to be more agressive, to improve his serve and his volley - "the things we were already working on with Thierry, after all".
- he expects from Gauthier a different, refreshing approach of the matches.
- he will probably leave Paris a bit, but he doesn't know yet where he is going to practice. The idea is to have a change of air. "Another life, another approach. I'm very excited about it."
- about his season: there were highs and lows, injuries. But he thinks it wasn't that bad. He had a few great runs. His ranking must stabilize until the end of the year though. He thinks it was a decent season.
(Well, I don't agree, the second part of the season was so disappointing...)

http://www.lequipe.fr/Tennis/20060926_082929_01.html

He considers going to the Bollettieri camp for his winter preparation. He likes "Bollettieri's ultra-modern methods" and the "Lagardère team" Gael belongs to is kind of working together with the Bollettieri camp now.
For the time being, he will start practicing again on next Monday. He must recover from 2 injuries at the same time: a ligament tear in the right foot and a stress fracture in the link foot.

Gosh poor Gael, all those injuries again and again. I don't know this guy who'll be his coach but if he was a coach of Lisnard back then, I don't think it's the most fortunate choice.

Interesting stuff about Gael in the blog "Grand Chelem" - but it's in French once again, sorry:

The transcription of the whole press conference:
http://www.grandchelem.net/mon_weblo...tgra.html#more

And a description of the "other side" of his press conference:
http://www.grandchelem.net/mon_weblo..._bas.html#more

I don't have time right now, but I'll try to make a summary later.
