I think it have something to with last year. Richard was awarded a WC but withdrew before the tournament. I would rather have him playing a Hard court tournament than a clay tournament. All the best Richard, a title here would do him good going into the 2 Masters and New York.

Federer is playing Gstaad this year, also on clay.

At first, I found Umag also a weird choice, but I think it is about not extending the break for too long and having some matches. It is well known that Richard is not a great lover of the US summer hard courts (except New York), so he chose a European tournament. And as it was pointed out, last year's withdrawal might have contributed as well.

Richard has a final to defend in Canada , so I think having a bit of match play before he goes into that tournament will be a good thing . While I can see value in playing on hard court to prepare , a clay tournament where he has a good chance of playing several matches and working out the rust of a layoff makes sense to me.
Right now , I hope he is resting , enjoying some time away with family and friends and feeling refreshed for the long summer to follow .

Default Re: Road To New York - It's Summer Season! [Umag]

Richard has 9 titles ATM, I'm hoping he can get the 10th in Umag which would be great!! He's won his last 3 Finals!!

I feel Richard should have played a 500 tournament before Montreal, it would help to defend his points from Toronto last year. I would have picked Washington but that would mean playing 4 weeks in a row from Umag, Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati and also Richard stating after Wimbledon this season has took it's toll on him so he would have needed a break.

Richard has only played 1 ATP 500 tournament this year and he only made the 2nd round in that. So he has tournaments to play in that level and gain as many points as possible. It looks Beijing/Tokyo and Basel will his only other ATP 500 tournaments for the year unless he asks for a WC to any tournament in the upcoming weeks.

Let's see how it goes but 250 points from Umag would help and be also be great!!

Allez!!

Default Re: Road To New York - It's Summer Season! [Umag]

Richard is quoted on Umag's website:

"My coach Riccardo, who has worked with Ivan Ljubicic as well, has been telling me wonderful things about Umag for years, so I always wanted to come and see it for myself. I almost came last year, but unfortunately couldn't make it. It is my great pleasure, as well as a responsibility, to play in Umag this year"

Richard's the only Top 10 player at Umag but the field is not straightforward - Cilic, Monfils,Janowicz, Verdasco, Robredo, and Fognini to name a few - potential for some good matches and hopefully good results & points.

Stan is playing Gstaad the same week. Hopefully he will lose early!

I took the word "responsibility" to mean that he has to go, but maybe I'm wrong.

It looks like a great event. I would definitely go if I could.

Personally, I wish he played Washington on hard-court (for the selfish reason that I get to see him ). Ironically, the only time he played it was in 2010, for the same reason he is playing Umag this year. He received a late wild-card and didn't want to disappoint by withdrawing, but he had made the final of Gstaad the week before and was exhausted, so he retired to Kristof Vliegen in the first round...and with that, I missed my only chance to see him play at my local tournament. I hope he comes back one day, or perhaps when I finally go the U.S. Open or Masters tourneys in the U.S.

Haas and Almagro are catching up on Richard in the RACE for London. A win for Haas will see him overtake Richard and put him at #11.

All the best Richard at Umag, hoping for a 10th title and important 250 points!! Seeing the other players around the same mark in the rankings winning and getting close to him, just makes me want Umag to come quicker!!

ALLEZ!

Vegeta Croatia Open‏(@CroatiaOpenUmag) - which I think is the official tournament twitter account - has posted this today:

"Unfortunately, because of the injuries, Marin Čilić and Jerzy Janowicz had to cancel."

I don't like to see anyone injured, but that would sure make Richard's week a little easier. Shame for the tournament though if it's true.

I think this might be true ...

Especially tough on Cilic not getting a chance to defend his title in Croatia.
