If we had a thread for every Roger accomplishment this forum would be overloaded. Regardless, Federer.

Making up for lost time. Other greats started winning it at a lot younger age so Roger had to do it all in a shorter period of time*.

* Though players like Lendl started winning slams about the same age as Roger.

The competition these days is better then it's ever been. The players that play today are more evolved and people who say otherwise just cannot accept that sports evolve and so do players! I think Andre is a better and more complete player then he was when he was younger, even at 35! Last year was the fittest I have ever seen him, and his head is screwed on much more tightly then it was years ago. This agruement is brought up a lot, mostly by people that try to hang on to the past and can't accept reality, times change! Roddick can serve how fast? Safin is how big and powerful? Nadal is how young and strong? Hewitt is how good of a returner? Even a non sports fan could distinguish the difference just by watching tapes from now and from 10 years ago!

so? who cares about speed if he cant place it well.
safin motivated and fit 5% of the time. muster was better then nadal i think. hewitt a counter puncher with little weapons yet makes semis/finals at almost each slam.

When you are in Laver's company only, you have to make something right... the debate over the quality of the field today is not fair because when you lose three times in more than a year you prove that you can beat every style of play, young guns and experienced players. The fact that Fed is the only one to control Roddick's serve on grass and in the same time beat every year the clay-specialists in a Masters Series, say a lot on his abilities. The difference with Pete's era is that the only 5+ slam winner still in shape is Agassi today, while at the time, for pure generation reasons, there were Lendl, Edberg, Becker, Agassi, then Hewitt. But that is more a question of chance than anything. Roger's direct rivals are his age or so. They didn't have time to win many slams. There was a gap between Agassi/Sampras and Fed's generation, with Rafter retiring early, Safin being inconsistent, and Guga being mostly a claycourter. Now it's gonna change with Gasquet and Nadal, but for me it's more a matter of chance than of weak field... Edberg, Becker, Lendl or Agassi had all their weaknesses, like Roddick and Hewitt today.

Even if Roger's competition is not as good as that of champions in the past, which is very debatable, you'll have to agree that Roger has a big margin. Federer's rivals have to improve a lot to start challenging him on a regular basis!

Having said that.... Roger!
