Björkman Awarded with 2005 ARAG FAIR PLAY TROPHY
Jonas Björkman was awarded with the 2005 ARAG Fair Play Trophy during a ceremony at the Staendehaus in Düsseldorf. The trophy was presented to the veteran Swede by Brazilian star Gustavo Kuerten, who has been practicing at the Rochusclub for Roland Garros, and Dr. Paul-Otto Fassbender, Director with ARAG.
Björkman, age 33, was chosen for his great sportsmanship both on and off the court – known to sometime overrule wrong decisions by umpires.
The veteran doubles specialist is playing in Düsseldorf for the ninth time. He was part of the winning Swedish team in 1995. Björkman became the third Swede after Stefan Edberg (1989, 1995) and Magnus Larsson (1994) to win the prestigious trophy, and said he was delighted to join his two countryman on the list: "I'm very proud of being awarded with the ARAG Fair Play Trophy", the father of a two-year-old son said during the "Night of the Champions." Bjorkman even asked all guests to stand up and sing “Happy Birthday” for Frenchman Michael Llodra who celebrated his 25th birthday on May 18th.
Guests at the Staendehaus included ATP Europe Director, Horst Klosterkemper, as well as all the players and captains from the competing teams at the ARAG ATP World Team Championship.
