Mirnyi's Battles On and Off the Court
by Brad Falkner
Tuesday, September 2, 2003

They call him the “Beast” for his size and tenacious on-court fighting spirit. But off the court, the 6-foot-5 Max Mirnyi is more of a gentle giant. The mellow Mirnyi is a devoted advocate of yoga and uses it prior to every match to help achieve the desired pre-match concentration.

While most tennis fans may know Mirnyi as a doubles specialist, he is now getting recognition for his singles game, as well. 2003 has been a breakthrough year in singles for Mirnyi. In February, he captured his first ATP singles tournament, taking out Roger Federer in the semifinals before defeating Raemon Sluiter for the title. Although he suffered a setback at this year’s US Open, losing in the first round to Nikolay Davydenko, Mirnyi is currently the 18th-ranked player on the ATP tour.

Mirnyi is one of a small handful of serve-and-volley players still left in tennis. It is generally thought that this style of play requires a longer maturing process than the typical baseline banger. If 2003 is any indicator, Mirnyi's game is ripening quite nicely. To be sure, Mirnyi will be a feared competitor in the fall indoor season.

The US Open doubles defending champion and world No. 1 in doubles, Mirnyi spent a portion of his free time yesterday engaged in different type of battle -- chess. Mirnyi took on the No. 1 18-and-under player in the country, Dmitry Schneider. Schneider, who had his hands full with more than Mirnyi (Schneider was simultaneously playing eight opponents), finished the day undefeated.

USOpen.org caught up with Max Mirnyi during the ongoing rain delay.

Brad Falkner: I noticed yesterday that you seemed to have the same focus in your chess match as you do in your tennis matches. Are you a big chess player?

Max Mirnyi: I think that it was a good thing for the USTA to organize it. I have not seen this at any other events, so it was nice to have somebody of his caliber come in and play with us.

BF: Do you consider yourself a strong chess player?

MM: Not really. I was taught how to play when I was young, and occasionally I play with my family.

BF: Apart from playing chess, what else have you been doing to occupy your time during the rain delay?

MM: Nothing really. It’s just good to sit around and do nothing sometimes because our schedules are so demanding and busy. I don’t mind. It’s a raining day. Nobody can do anything about it. It’s good to have a couple books, write a few e-mails and talk to people.

BF: You spent some time living in Brooklyn. Do you get to see some of your old friends during the US Open?

MM: Some people come out and support me here. I stay in touch with a few of them. It’s always a special feeling to come back and be able to play well in New York.

BF: It must have been a great feeling to capture the No. 1 ranking in doubles this year?

MM: Well, it’s very rewarding for all the years of hard training. It’s sort of a dream coming true, in a way. It’s something that I’ll treasure forever. There are still a lot of other goals to achieve, a lot of incentive to play this game. I like playing. I like competing. I like the lifestyle. I’m looking forward to continuing to do it.

I'm back. In my time off, Mirnyi has become a national hero, lifting Belarus into the World Group of Davis Cup for the first time ever after an incredible upset in the qualifying round over Germany. In the first singles match, Mad Max came from match points down to win, and then he steamrolled Schuettler to clinch the tie on Sunday. Belarus!

Also, Max reached the semifinals in Vienna, which was an excellent effort, losing to eventual champ Federer. He recently gave Roddick a strong test (7-5 in the third) in the Madrid second round, so he should be proud of his performance. Not bad against the world #2. I hope Max can continue this good form that he's shown post-US Open disaster and finish at a career-high ranking.

Btw, Mad Max recently published a book about his career as a tennis professional. Written in Russian, which unfortunately I can't read. It's called "Peaceful Tennis", or something like that.

Yeah, I heard about Lindsay's surgery. I posted a reply to it on the wtaworld general message board. I know I haven't been on the Lindsay forum much but I've just been disappointed. Her showing against Clijsters at the Open was simply disheartening. Her entire year was pretty bad overall; worst since, like, 1996. 1-5 in finals and 0-8 versus the "Untocuhable Foursome" (Belgians, Williams). I still believe in Lindsay, I just don't believe that she believes. Anyway, this is supposed to be a cheerful Max forum, right?!

Awww, I didn't know that Tommy Haas helped to write the book! I knew that they were pretty good friends since they both train with Bolleteri in Florida (along with Xavier Malisse). I remember reading a cute article last fall about how the three of them were all healing from injuries together and having a good time in training.

*crosses finger for an English copy of "Peaceful Tennis" to be published*

i'm not positive at all!I believe good times wont be back but i still love her and love watching her matches...sometimes i feel like i love her now more than ever.and thinking that i might lose Lindsay in 1 year (retirement) makes me appreciate every moment i can see her playing.
so i dont tell you to dream about her winning slams etc.i just tell you to keep loving her cos she deserves to be cheered on also in bad moments.
