Thanks for the link to the videos. I've only watched one so far (darn dial-up takes forever to load videos ) Paulo is adorable in it as usual. I love the part where the tree "attacks" him

Interviews
August 6, 2007

P.MATHIEU/G.Cañas
4‑6, 7‑5, 6‑0

An interview with:
PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU

Q. You won four of the first 14 games and 13 of the last 14. How do you explain such a significant turnaround against a quality player?
PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU: I don't know. Sometimes it happen like this. Not very often.
No, I mean, I was 6‑4, 4‑Love down. I just said to myself, I mean, try to play loose, just to be happy on the court because I was a little bit frustrated. And then I start to play better. I did less mistake. Then I played really good.

Q. Did you try any strategy change, the way you approached it?

PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU: Yeah, I tried to play more his backhand because I think I play too much his forehand at the beginning. In the end, he was playing very good with his forehand. I just try to play his backhand, be more patient, and when I had the short ball, I just went for it.

Q. Do you think you pressed him to the point where he started making some unforced errors? Did you think at some point in the second set that you could actually swing it? Was there a point in the second set that you thought, Yeah, I can win this match, even when you were down?
PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU: At 4‑3 I said, if I can break him back, to be back at 4‑All, I said, Yeah, I have a chance. When I broke him back, when it was 4‑All, I said, Yeah, I have the chance again.

Q. The meeting you had in Miami with the person the ATP brought in, a member of an organized crime syndicate, tell me about the context of the meeting, what he shared with you.

PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU: What the guy ‑‑ I mean, he just was explaining to us that he was gambling before, then he went through drugs and everything, crime. He went to the jail for, I don't know, 20 years. Was a little bit too much for us.
But he was explaining the danger that we can have to start gambling.

Q. Especially in light of Davydenko, do you feel you're more aware and sensitive of this stuff?
PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU: Honestly, I have no idea. Even we talk about Davydenko. Anybody knows what happened with Davydenko? Yeah, he retired in one match. Doesn't mean that he did anything before. I don't know. I mean, I honestly I don't know. Honestly, I don't know.

Interviews
August 9, 2007

R. NADAL/P. Mathieu
3‑6, 6‑3, 6‑2

PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU

Q. Tu aurais pu le faire, quoi.

PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU: Oui.

Q. Tu pars aujourd'hui?
PAUL-HENRI MATHIEU: Demain, je pense, oui.

[l'entrevue se poursuit en anglais]

Q. Mixed emotions after playing a great player so well for so long? One respect that you played at a high level, but obviously disappointed?
PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU: Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed, but I play ‑‑ I think I play a good match. He fight good till the end. I had a couple of chances in the second set, and I didn't take them. But, then it was tougher.

But it's not easy to play against him, because he plays very, very high. So you have to be 100% all the time.

So, no, he deserves to win.

Q. Hard to play a long match over your shoulder all the time?
PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU: Yeah, he's very hard to play because the ball is really high. So when you play for two, two hours and a half, under your shoulder ‑ I mean over your shoulder ‑ it's very tough. I mean, it's not easy.

Q. That's another thing?
PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU: Yeah.

Q. What did you do in the first set that you didn't do in the second and the third?
PAUL‑HENRI MATHIEU: I didn't win (laughter).

This was in L'EQUIPE today :

_______

Basically, it says Paulo was complaining about the conditions at New Haven because his last match was scheduled on a court where the lines weren't straight. At first he was supposed to have a week of practice in New York before the US Open but he was disappointed by his run at Cincinnati so he decided to play another tournament.

He's not exactly happy about his next opponent, Almagro, "a weird guy. I don't appreciate him very much", because they had a match 3 years ago in Hamburg that Almagro won 6/2 - 6/2 and the guy apparently said to everybody that Paulo sucked big time. So he's hoping he can kick his ass this time

About his draw at the USO, Paulo says he hasn't been lucky at all, Verdasco is a good player, blah blah... Yet, Paulo's goal is still to reach the top 15. He thinks he can do it so he will play in more tournaments.

The part about how he was suppose to have a week off but decided to play because of Cincy not going well, doesn't really make sense since he was already on the entry list....unless he had plans of pulling out

I hope he doesn't go and play in too many tournaments just as an attempt to reach his goal in the rankings. We need a healthy and NOT injured Paulo.

Kick butt today Paulo

From the US Open website:

Verdasco Prevails in Dramatic Win
By Clair Maciel
Monday, August 27, 2007

Fernando Verdasco of Spain weathered quite a test in his first-round match against France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu. After finding himself down two sets to none, Verdasco dug deep to turn the match around and pull out a 3-6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win and advance to the second round.

In his next match-up, unseeded Verdasco will face another Frenchman, Gilles Simon, who advanced when Alexander Waske retired from his first-round match Monday.

The match between Verdasco and Mathieu was a hard-fought baseline battle in which both players ripped heavy groundstrokes on nearly every point. Verdasco committed a crippling number of unforced errors throughout the first two sets, while Mathieu had an easy time finding the court for winners.

By the end of two sets, that momentum—as well as the crowd—began to swing in Verdasco’s favor, and it was Mathieu who was spraying shots outside the lines. His frustration with both himself and a few close line calls caused Mathieu to lose his temper, throw his racket against the back fence and later slam his racket on the ground.

Verdasco was ahead by as much as 5-1 in the third set before Mathieu pushed it to 5-4, forcing the lefty Spaniard to serve out the set. Then after four breaks of serve, Verdasco took the fourth set on Mathieu’s serve to even the match.

A revitalized Verdasco came out firing at the start of the fifth, jumping to a 4-1 lead and taking advantage of Mathieu’s increasing number of errors. The most dramatic game, however, came with Verdasco serving for the match at 5-3. Verdasco had match point at 40-15, but Mathieu fought it off, along with four more, before Verdasco unloaded two consecutive forehand down-the-line winners to take the match.

Verdasco’s quarter of the draw includes top-seed Roger Federer, as well as big servers Andy Roddick, Tomas Berdych, Ivo Karlovic and John Isner.
