And...should one learn Mandarin or Cantonese first?
Et...est-ce qu'on devrait apprendre le Mandarin ou le Cantonais en premier?

My parents say Madarin is easier because with the pronunciation words like yi and er ther have tones with them. In total there are 4 types of tones, whereas with cantonese not so

Mandarin is spoken throughout China while Cantonese is a dialect which is spoken in certain regions of the country. My grandparents came from Hainan Island so Hainanese is my dialect. People in China usually speak their dialect plus Mandarin.
I would say Mandarin is more useful because it is sort of the "official" language and it can be used throughout China. Even when I went to Hainan Island, I found that most of the people spoke Mandarin in addition to their dialect.

Ok! Thanks for explaining that. I knew Cantonese was a dialect but isn't it the most spreaded/spoken dialect or something?
So it will be Mandarin if i ever learn a chinese language one day...
Thanks for the numbers!
Yes? no? Maybe? ...
Ok! Merci de m'avoir expliqué ça. Je savais que le Cantonais était un dialecte mais ce n'est pas le plus répandu/parlé ou un truc du genre?
Donc ça sera le Mandarin s'il m'arrivait d'apprendre une langue chinoise un jour...
Merci pour les nombres!
Et pour oui? Non? Peut-être?...
