Blake, Fish Receive Cincinnati Wild Cards
By Tennis Week
A former finalist and a doubles champion will be back in Cincinnati next month. Americans Mardy Fish and James Blake have accepted wild cards into Cincinnati's Western & Southern Financial Group Masters August 15th-21st.
The tournament has four main draw wild cards at its disposal. Wild cards which are typically given to players with significant fan appeal, but with rankings not high enough to allow them direct entry into the tournament. The other two wild cards will be announced prior to the draw ceremony on August 12th.
The 23-year-old Fish was runner-up to former Boca Raton housemate Andy Roddick in the 2003 Cincinnati final. That effort, and a title at Stockholm, helped him finish 2003 ranked a career-high No. 20. Last August, Fish won the silver medal at the Athens Summer Olympic Games.
The 25-year-old Blake won the 2002 Cincinnati doubles title with Todd Martin, his only ATP Masters Series title of any kind. He won a singles title at Washington, D.C. in 2002 and has reached three other finals in his career. He will be making his fourth appearance in Cincinnati where he has reached the round of 16 twice.
Cincinnati’s Western & Southern Financial Group Masters is one of the 13 major events in men’s professional tennis. The four Grand Slams and the nine ATP Masters Series events form the biggest events in men’s tennis and are all mandatory events for players ranked high enough to enter. Players already committed to the men’s Masters main draw include defending champion Andre Agassi and 2003 champion Andy Roddick, Wimbledon champ Roger Federer, French Open champ Rafael Nadal, Australian Open champ Marat Safin, Britain’s Tim Henman, and Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt.
The W&SFG Masters is the oldest tournament in the nation still played in its original city. It is held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, the only tennis facility outside the Grand Slams with more than one permanent stadium. It is located across from Paramount’s Kings Island on Interstate 71 and is approximately one hour from Columbus.
