La confiance est alors totalement du côté du Français. Chardy réussit le break d'entrée de seconde manche pour mener 2-0 puis 4-2 avant de faiblir devant l'enjeu et de perdre à nouveau son service. Nieminen revient dans le match et profite des petites faiblesses du Français pour revenir à 4 jeux partout. Le Finlandais semble prendre le dessus physiquement sur son adversaire. Les deux duettistes ne lâchent plus leur service jusqu'au deuxième jeu décisif remporté cette fois-ci par le N.15 mondial (7-4)

On pense alors que l'expérience du Finlandais va lui permettre de conclure le match facilement dans la troisième manche, surtout lorsqu'il prend le service du Français dès le premier jeu. Mais dans une réaction d'orgueil, Chardy recolle tout de suite au score et breake son adversaire pour revenir à 1-1. Le jeune Français sent qu'il a un coup à jouer sur ce match. Il est à deux doigt de l'exploit lorsqu'il reprend le service du Finlandais pour mener 5-3. Seulement, Nieminen n'est pas dans les vingt meilleurs joueurs mondiaux pour rien. Il recolle tout de suite au score, prend à deux reprises le service de son adversaire et se retrouve, à 6-5, à servir pour le match. Mais Chardy ne baisse pas les bras, fait preuve d'un mental exceptionnel, bénéficie du brin de chance nécessaire pour réaliser les exploits et égalise à 6 partout. Lors de l'ultime jeu décisif, l'expérience du Scandinave fait enfin la différence. Malgré deux balles de match sauvées par le Français et un retour à 6 points à 6, Nieminen s'impose 8-6 dans le tie-break et remporte le match.

Jarkko Nieminen retrouvera au second tour un autre Français puisqu'il sera confronté à Nicolas Mahut tombeur cet après-midi de la tête de série N.2, le Croate Ivan Ljubicic.

J'ai joué sur mes qualités: le service, des volées bien placées et puis j'ai surtout essayé d'écourter les échanges au maximum, c'était essentiel face à un joueur comme lui qui aime les rallyes. Et puis j'ai surtout été régulier, c'est pour ça que je suis passé tout près.

Pas mal pour un joueur éliminé lors des qualifs...

Oui c'est vrai que j'ai eu beaucoup de chance de remplacer Sébastien (Grosjean). En fait, j'ai failli prendre la place de Stepanek puis j'ai encore attendu et j'ai appris ce matin que j'allais rencontrer Nieminen.

Comment t'es-tu senti avec le public?
Je dois avouer que c'est impressionant. Je n'en ai pas l'habitude et ça rajoute un peu de pression c'est sûr! Mais j'ai bien été conseillé par mon entraîneur.

À quel niveau es-tu actuellement et quels sont tes objectifs cette année?

J'ai pas mal travaillé depuis le début de l'année et plutôt bien. Ça fait d'ailleurs plaisir de voir que le travail porte ses fruits. Ce genre de match me fait progresser et malgré la défaite, c'est bon pour la suite.
Concernant mes objectifs, je n'en ai pas vraiment à court terme. J'essaie de faire le mieux possible pour l'instant. En me projettant plus loin par contre, mon but est d'intégrer le Top 30.

Et par rapport à la génération française montante, où en es-tu?
J'ai pas mal de retard! Mais je vais continuer à travailler dur pour les rattraper petit à petit, commencer à jouer des Grands Chelems... J'ai 20 ans, c'est encore possible!

You're sure? She could be his sister. His sister and his mother play tennis and his father and brother play football so he hesitated between the two when he was young but chose tennis etc...
