Lightbulb Dragos Nicolae Madaras (New Romanian hope ?)

.
Dragos Nicolae Madaras, nicknamed : "Dodi" : 17 years old , #62 in Juniors just made a Futures Final in the $10k Sweden F3 Clay Tournament in Bastad at only his 2nd Seniors tournament participation (last week he qualified for $10k Sweden F2)

Until the final , he beat a local WC player, then #539 , #529 and #1446 . http://www.itftennis.com/procircuit/...tid=1100034452 . The final will be tomorrow.

He's the first Romanian youngster, after *Patrick Ciorcila (*for whom tennis is not the most important thing, at least for now ) to make this step.

Age Started Tennis: 7
Coach Name: Mattias Arvidsson (coached Johanna Larsson, Polona Hercog etc.)
Favourite Surface: Clay

Born and Raised in Deva, Romania . Resident in Helsingborg, Sweden . Speaks : Romanian, English, Swedish.

Very early to say more, but he looks promising to say the least. Opinions ?

.

Let`s hope Nastase, Tiriac or Cosac will give him a call. It would be a shame to lose such a talent. I`m afraid that he will represent Sweden if no one gives a damn about him in Romania...

I'm also a little afraid of that . I didn't want to write it in the 1st post.

But other Romanian good players also established or trained for big periods of time in other countries as well. Pescariu, Pavel, Voinea, Ungur, Copil, Tecau. So hopefully he's like the others.

At this point , I would like even Radu Albot to play for Romania. But Tiriac or someone , would have to offer him a little something . Not the other 2 that you mentioned cause they don't care (anymore) about Romanian tennis youngsters or development (the last one even hampering the progress for his own interests )

Dragos Madras lost the final today. Mikael Ymer (Elias Ymer's little brother) beat him (2-6 6-1 6-2). It's true that he wants to represent Sweden in the future.

He came to Sweden five years ago and in a recent interview he said that its not the same opportunities in Romania. They do not help to build up the players, they only focus on the very best. He feels everything is much better in Sweden and he hopes to be Swedish and represent Sweden in Davis Cup in the future. The Swedish Davis Cup captain thinks it's a great idea so in a year or two he should be Swedish.

Thanks. Now I'm a little sad.

Of course Romania can't be compared to Sweden in terms of sports "possibilities" but it's not only in tennis , especially when the f*cking federation president spends 20000 euros for going to "support" Halep in the WTA Finals or Fed Cup in Montreal instead of helping juniors Frunza and Ruse go to the Aussy Open.

But IDK who lied to him ,his parents or whoever : who is helping the 'very best' ? Romania (including the Federation) didn't give sh*t to Halep nor to other good tennis players.
. There is little Investment in sports here.

The players I mentioned in the previous post all settled or trained in other countries but still represented Romania without hesitating. These statements are not good and I think it will be very hard to change his mind . Just when I started to have a little hope ....

Definitely sounds like he's planning to represent Sweden very soon, maybe before this season is over or starting next season, so he can join the other young Swedes' training group. First he will go with Johanna Larsson and her coach to Roland Garros.

That said I feel for you, it was the same for Swedish juniors until very recently aswell(which answers the poor results). We even lost some players to other countries like Matilde Johansson so we know about that too. Despite our previous success in tennis and general state of economy the money involved with tennis in Sweden is very limited. It's not even a top10 sport anymore. Anyway, you have to give a damn about the talent, else it won't matter how big of a talent he is. Looks like we've finally realized.

Btw, tennis is after all mostly an individual sport, it's easy to root for a player no matter his flag. I wish this kid the best.

We have some problems on ATP. After 20 years or so, we don't have any players ranked among top 150. We have a good tradition in Davis Cup, we played 3 finals. From 1995 until 2007(or something like that) we were always on the World Group. So it's sad to lose a player that can bring you back to the top. But I`m thinking about Greece, who lost players like Sampras, Kyrgios or Kokkinakis...
Anyway, Nightcrawl3r is right, we have a lot of players who trained outside Romania but choose to represent us. The last players we`ve lost were Ilka Csoregi( US Open juniors quarterfinalists in 2012), and Catalin Gard(224 ATP in 2008)

^ Csoregi was also #13 in Juniors. We also lost Sabina Dadaciu (14 y.o promising junior) and Edina Gallovits-Hall (ex #54 WTA) . And IDK about those many Romanian young girls that represent Canada if they were all born and raised in Canada .

About Sampras , Kyrgios and Kokkinakis I personally don't know their background regarding this.

Also, another sad fact, US Open 2014 was the 1st time since Wimbledon 1995 when Romania didn't have a player in Men's Singles MD .

Hopefully someone changes this kid's mind, and without lies like "Romania is helping only the very best".

They are all of Greek descent but Sampras was born and raised in America, so he's an American. Kyrgios and Kokkinakis are Aussies born and bred, their ethnic background doesn't matter so I wouldn't say that Greece lost those players because they were never Greek players to begin with. They represent the country they belong to.

However I can understand why some people get upset when their country men moves to another country and decides to switch nationalities so they can represent their new adopted country.

I have read Sampras autobiography, I know that he was born and raised in USA, but his famility kept almost almost all greek traditions in the family like orthodox religion, greek language, etc.
I'm not in the position to judge anyone, but if I will move to another country and my son will be born there, I will teach him romanian, tell him about all the beauty Romania has to offer and told him to represent Romania. Just because I moved to another country, that`s not a reason to disrespect my ancestors, who fought for my country in all kind of wars. Anyway, that`s how I'm thinking the matter, I don't say I'm right, but it's my personal opinion
