except that the courts in AO suit him better than grass courts. And also, he was coming back from almost year off that's right, but he had been training very hard during a whole month before AO so he was in great shape... today he has an injured knee
Situations are quite different methinks.
But i agree that with him it's mostly about confidence, so maybe...

The good thing is he's got some confidence back after Halle. Because i think the old Marat would have taken a look at that draw and probably thought: pfff, i'm 100% sure i'll lose in the first round... and would have started the tournament with very negative thoughts in his mind. So hopefully after his good performances in Halle he'll arrive in Wimbledon more ambitious than he was in the past. I really hope so.

Yes maybe a tough draw may bring the best in him, but Philippoussis is VERY scary on grass

No, he hasn't been really in 3 yrs or so. Of all Marat's opponents till the "supposed" quarters I fear Beck the most. I think he will beat the Poo in rd 1 and he's frigging dangerous, the breed of opponents Marat dislikes the most. Speedy, tenacious, good returner, excellent dropshot - all the ingredients are there to drive Marat ballistic. Lopez is a choker. Ancic is all hat and no cattle - the most massively overrated player I've seen in a while. I think Oli will upset him.

But let's worry about those guys if we pass 1st round.

I don´t think the confidence from Halle will help him. He has to start from zero. Because Marats confidence automatically drops when he loses a final... no matter how he played during the tourney or in the final, and especially a final against Federer he was close to win. Of course he is telling he had a great week, it will bring him confidence bla bla...but i most probably know that these final losses always hurt him more than he wants to admit. He fell in a hole everytime ... (AO 2002, Hamburg 2002, Barcelona 2003, AO 2004, Estoril 2004) and needed ages to recover (losing always in the first or second...) and then he suddenly won a title or some more after half a year.
PS: I`m just trying to be not optimistic, I hope I`m wrong

His confidence miraculously dissappeared after he won AO final too. His confidence lives it's own life so ...

you are right, and I think it never happened before with him. Only after final losses...well nobody could ever understand it anyway.
Seems like the confidence disappears when he/she feels like it

He should do well enough. Winning in the first few rounds is do-able.

I agree with you about him losing confidence after finals he didn't win... but again there was a difference: all those finals were played on surfaces he likes, so of course losing them did affect him....
Grass isn't a surface he likes to play on, so even if he lost that final i think he gain confidence more than he lost it, because he did play well on a surface he doesn't like, and he did reach a final on that surface. So yeah he lost a final, but he proved himself he could be good on grass and he reached a final on grass for the first time of his life. To me it's quite positive.

Of course he could lose in first round next week. With Marat we never know. And i understand you don't want to be too optimistic, i don't want to either. But at least this year i'm thinking: hey, he could do something after all.... last year he arrived in Wimbledon with only pessimistic thoughts, and i was thinking: he'll lose. If when trying to do something you feel from the beginning that you'll fail, then you fail.
This year his attitude has changed, so he might do well...

I really hope he does well at Wimbledon this year ... not just to see him enjoy some success, but mainly as it will prove to him that he really does have a game for grass!

IF he loses early on (and I'm a hopeless eternal optimist so this hurts to say), I hope it's to someone playing blisteringly good tennis ... I won't be too upset if he goes down fighting ... but, I will be mightily annoyed if he just shrugs his shoulders as if to say "See, I can't play on grass" - that's a childish attitude and it doesn't belong in the psyche of a champion ...

he has proved in Halle that he can do well on grass, and it took RoboRogi to beat him ... if some 'nobody' (ie someone who isn't no. 1) had beaten him I don't think he'd be going into Wimbledon with the same kind of confidence, but being beaten by Feds is a different story!

does this make sense? anyway ... bed is beckoning!

yep, I agree about the surface. Of course for him its different to reach a final on grass than on any other surface (also we hope that will change, im quite optimistic because he just needs to believe he can play on grass)
But speaking of the final itself... its very hurtfull for him, despite his positive attitude afterwards (he also had this after the others). Anyway, anyone who saw the final probably knows what I mean Because its even more hurtfull that he had so many chances in this final on THIS surface against this player and he wasted them... I think thats still in his mind. And as he already has problems with playing finals and his confidence after them.... its difficult. So you can see it on many sides.
Sure, in Wimbledon anything can happen. I think it wont depend on Halle anyway.
I also agree about his state of mind. I also think he will play Wimbledon with another attitude than last year at least.
