Spain announces their team
On paper the best team in DC - Juan Carlos Fererro, Carlos Moya, Albert Costa and Alex Corretja. Now this is a winning team.

well yes they are the best on clay but they look awesome on hardcourts as well (may struggle indoors). Alex and Albert will probably play doubles i just hope Moya and Ferrero won't skip DC again like last year. I do not know what was the reason but they both entered tournament in Estoril the next week. Alex has been the most reliable player for Spain in the last years.

They'll win easily no matter who'll play.

Sorry to say jrm but I don't agree with you when you said
" Ferrero and moya skipped the DC cup last year"
Moya didn't even played in the daviscupteam last year, only Ferrero. And in 2001 moya was the only spanjard who won a match in single indoors against Netherland.
So no bad word about moya please...
And the spanjards are good on clay but also on hardcourt, indoors (corretja won Toulouse, Moyke was in the final in the masters and so did ferrero, Corretja beated sampras on gras last year....)
The time the spanjards were only claycourt players is over!!!!

they had alberto martin playing singles on grass - that all i have to say - they are good on other surfaces as well but if they face russia or france indoors they are tosted and probably any decent team on grass - but still they have a good chance of coming far and if they face USA in second round it will be on clay

This has been covered, but I want to elaborate...

Agreed about the hard courts. Moya and Corretja both have one master series on hard, and Ferrero has started to show consistency on hard in the past few months. All except Costa have hard court titles.
As for indoors, I think that they are being under-rated. Obviously they will struggle, and perhaps lose to, a great indoors team. But I think it's a bit early to assume that they would get a butt kicking from just about any team that has one or two indoors players. Unless of course, it's indoor carpet....then they might be toast

Ferrero was injured the first two months of last year. He started out his clay season injured. He didn't want to fly all the way to the USA to aggravate his injury on a surface that he was not prepared for, and totally blow his season.
Furthermore, he would not have played anyhow.
1 - he was not healthy
2 - he would likely not have played singles had he been healthy, as Corretja, Robredo etc would have been better grass choices.

lol. It's gonna be Alex and Albert no doubt, Sushi won't play double, no worries .
BTW, last year, he had a foot injury in TMS Miami. The doctor in US said he needed 3 weeks to recover from the injury, so he didn't play Davis Cup which is right after Miami even he's already in the States. But he recovered faster than the doctor said it would take. And he said he really wants to show up in Estoril since he was the defending champion, so he went to Estoril and ended up losing in the 2nd round. And not sure if they will make him play the single on grass anyway even if he's fit.
Anyhow, I'm excited about this year's Davis Cup as I think Spain has a good chance for the title. So good luck to Spain.

BTW, not saying that they will kick ass on indoor carpet. But Moya did get to TMS Paris SF (beat Grosjean the defending champ) and Ferrero got to SF of Basel last year. So they are not totally hopeless on Carpet . Having said that, if the opponent is France or Russia, then they are likely to get kick by Escude or Safin .

Well Spain is at home this tie, and if they get the USA they are at home - I'm not sure if they would be at home against Croatia though. That one could be somewhat interesting.
They are seeded for Argentina in the semis. I'm not sure who would be home or away - if they both got there - but it's safe to say that neither team will want it on grass or carpet

Why not Tommy Robredo? Yes he's form hasn't been great this year but he can play doubles right?

In order to play Robredo, who are they going to give the bump?
One of their top 5 players? Or how about the reigning Roland Garros champion? Or how about their most reliable Davis Cup cup player in the past many years, who is a 2 time finalist on the grand slam surface that they are going to be playing on?
That's why Robredo hardly ever gets to play.

I hadn't actually thought about it, but every guy on this team has either won Roland Garros or been to the finals.
