I'm no Fakervic fan but he needs to save tennis, sadly tree trunk legs will be fresh. Interesting he's never questioned...

250s or 500s of course. Winning masters, same as for winning slams, he would need some luck, that is to avoid top competition or to catch them on a bad day

imho until Murray wins a MS on clay beating the top 4 and I don't mean Tsonga on clay, there will still be some kind of blockage mentally in slam finals despite losing in his 4th.He knows that he's THE only one in the top 3 who has yet to win a title on clay much less a MS and you better believe it is weighing on him

Somewhere somehow, Murray is going to win a clay title. But I have no clue when and where that's going to be

Default Re: Andy Murray on clay. Will he ever win a clay title?

Eh, this could go either way.. Murray, like Hewitt, works a lot better on the faster surfaces. They aren't counter-punchers like Chang where he would just chase down anything. Murray and Hewitt use faster surface speeds to their advantage allowing them to draw more errors and take more time away from their opponents while using their retrieving skills. On clay, he ironically cannot be as passive on points, he has to be actually forcing the issue. I mean look at Rafa, yes Rafa plays great defense, but the true reason why he has so much success on clay is that he can constantly barrage you with more aggressive shots that wear you down.

As far as the question of will he ever win a clay title, I think the answer is yes. However, remember that Andy barely plays random clay events, if at all, that do not feature Novak, Rafa and Roger. He could certainly pick up a title at like an Estoril or whatever. Madrid is his best chance, however, he ironically doesn't have a great record at Madrid since it became clay, Rome and Monte Carlo have brought more success. Roland Garros is obviously quite a stretch, he would need to be very aggressive and the stars will have to align for him that week, but as always with Andy, he has enough game to pull off these things. He just needs to sort himself out mentally and choose the right plays, because so often he makes a very terrible play allowing his opponents breathing room.

The funny thing is I remember when Murray first broke through and the media was saying he was most comfortable on Clay because he had grown up training on it. Yeah wonder what happened to that...

Actually if I remember correctly, those were Andy's own words, not the media now if memory continues to serve me right, Andy used to go as far to say that clay was his favorite surface.

BBC Sport in 2004

"Forget Wimbledon, Andrew Murray is a clay-court specialist."

Even if he doesn't, that's ok. Boris Becker never won a title on clay and, if I remember correctly, he reached only something like 5 finals on clay in his entire career. I am not comparing Murray to Boris, but merely stating a fact.

He will if he starts vulturing Mickey Mouse clay events like Ferrer, Monaco and co.

But he's too talented and too good a player for that. His focus on the big events probably means he will never win a clay title.

He can win a let's say Estoril title and maybe Madrid if he doesn't have to face Federer/Djokovic/Nadal but that's not very likely.

Default Have we seen the best from Murray on clay?

I've always wondered whether Andy Murray has done his best on clay and since he won the US Open the general consensus is that Roland Garros is the only Slam that he doesn't have a good chance at, but I think there's several reasons why it's not as inconceivable as people think:

+He grew up on clay.
+His coach was extremely accomplished on the surface.
+His forehand has improved so much, even since the CC season of last year. Clay is all about point building and the forehand is probably the most important shot on clay.
+He has injured himself the last 2 years at Roland Garros yet he still managed a semi-final where he lost to Nadal (and had chances) and Ferrer in 4.
+And I know people will say ''but he hasn't even reached a final on clay'' but in the last 2 years (especially last year) Murray hasn't actually played as well at all of the Masters events.

What are your thoughts? Obviously Murray has far better chances at the other slams but surely if he gets a bit of luck ie. Nadal and Djokovic meeting in the Quarters this year or (semis in future years when Nadal inevitably gets back to top 4) then he must be in with a shout?

Last year he lost to Ferrer, Raonic and Gasquet, so it's not like only Nole and Nadal can take him out. Dunno, he looks almost like he doesn't care much if he plays at all between Miami and Wimbledon
