Murray could very well win his first clay title in 2011. better focus on small tournies, though.

You've decided who is the best on clay this year, seemingly arbritrarily. Ferrer won an event on clay this year, Federer won none, Federer reached one final, Ferrer reached two, Federer made one TMS semi final, Ferrer made two. Yet despite performing worse overall, and achieving worse results (in all but one event), Federer is the better player! Does Federer even need to turn up? Or should he always be no. 2 in the rankings?

Equally, whatever Murray achieves, you've decided it 'doesn't count', because Murray simply isn't any good as a clay court player, in your mind. This is despite the fact that he's proven he can beat 'second tier' clay courters, and reach the QFs and SFs, which is all he needs to do to be top 20. Who else are you putting above him? Players with worse results, who somehow deserve the ranking more - just because you say so?

Finally, I find it funny you try to pass Serena off as being humble, given everything she's said. Especially, when the content of her statement in this case, is "I can take on the guys, and I'm the only woman (besides Venus) who can". She was simply being realistic with her expectations. If she struggles with her hitting partner, how exactly is she going to take on someone within the top 100 of the ATP?

And with regard to Nadal, note that he never says he can't win, merely that it will be very hard, that he'll have to play his best tennis, etc. But he always backs himself to play at his best, when it counts. Serena is saying she can't win, which you would never hear from a top pro, and it demonstrates the gulf in ability between the men and women.
Nadal was tanking that Toronto match and Federer's form sucked. Nalbandian is just Nalbandian and is very beatable. Mugray's only potential is to push and wait for his opponent's errors.

And duh. Of course Federer is a better player than Ferrer. Dont forget that Federer won their match on clay this year as well, which shows Federer>Ferrer.

Murray did not reach QFs & SFs at the clay events. Dont overrate him. His best showing was only a QF in Madrid where he got thrashed by Ferrer. He did not reach any SFs. Also, does losing to the likes of Kohlscreiber,Monaco and Gonzalez mean beating 'second tier' clay courters to you?

Next, how do you know who Serena's hitting partner is? It could be Roddick, who is obviously too good for her. Some WTA players practice with the men on the ATP tour, just like Wozniacki and Isner have practiced together before.

Before his SF match at WTF, Murray also said that he had almost zero chance of winning, so sometimes they do render themselves as useless and very beatable.

Then that certainly means she can beat Mugray on clay

Anyway, Roddick would thrash her now.

And all those other (8) times he beat Federer, we're just going to discount as well? And his four wins against Nadal, two in the slams, they were just flukes also? We're getting away from the original point, though, which is that Murray can lose a set 6-0, and still come back and somehow 'fluke' multiple victories against tough opponents, to win the tournament. It isn't a sign of anything other than Murray's tendency to 'switch off' sometimes during matches.

Right, so Federer needn't play any clay court tournaments at all? Or do any training, or play at a high level in any of his matches? He just deserves a higher ranking by virtue of what he did in the past? Federer played poorly on clay this year, and the rankings reflect that. If he'd played better, he'd be ranked higher.

His best showing this year, where he incidentally gave Ferrer a tough match, with many long rallies and break point opportunities. Last year he made 2 quarters (one at RG) and a semi. That's enough to think he can continue to perform on that level.

This year, he also lost to players like Fish, Querrey and Tipsarevic on hardcourt. Just because he has some 'bad' losses doesn't mean he can't perform on a surface. In tennis, being ranked higher than an opponent doesn't mean that they can't beat you, and in particular Murray has shown that he's vulnerable to big hitters, like Gonzalez, or this year, Berdych. That's a match up issue. It doesn't mean he lacks the game to beat many, or the the majority of the 'second tier' clay courters, as his victories attest.

If you actually read the quote, you'll see that her hitting partner isn't even a pro.

He was being sarcastic, as he admitted in his Twitter. His comments caused such attention precisely because they were so out of character.

Serena in 2002 could probably win a few games against someone outside top 100. I've never seen so much power and precision off both wings and such a lethal serve from any WTA player in history. Of course right now, her ground game is muggy and she is all serve, but people need some perspective as to what peak Serena was like. It was like playing a man on a WTA tour, literally.

Serena may hit the ball hard, but there is a difference between ATP power and WTA power. Also, the movement difference is dramatic, and the fact is, at 5'9, she would be short, and she's never had great footwork. She's no different than what Serra is, and he's mocked on these forums.

The difference is Serra would beat her 6-0 6-0, but I get your point.

Not really, Serena aced Djokovic a couple of times in HC, there is no reason she couldn't win a couple of games off a mug like Serra.
