I really look forward to watch the second round tomorrow, shame that i have to leave the region on Friday. I guess there will be a lot of nice matches in the QFs and SFs. Langer, Knittel, Martin, Veger and Lammer. Very good indoor players.

Rooting for Basti. His last month as a professional tennis player, i hope he will win the two Futures and have a good last tournament in Heilbronn.

Wait, what? Please explain? Knittel is quitting tennis...???

Yes. He is playing the last month as a professional tennis player. Two Futures in Schwieberdingen and Stuttgart-Stammheim, then playing the Challenger HeilbronnOpen (Wild Card) and retiring after the tournament. He will work as a tennis coach in the future.

Understandable choice. He doesn't have enough game (and not the fitness) to be a consistent Top 200 player. At least he can quit on his home turf and having made the main draw of Wimbledon (courtesy of Cipolla )

I don't agree. Knittel has the game to be a Top 150 player regulary. He can play on all surfaces. I really like his game, attacking tennis. But he has not the body. So much problems with injuries in the last years and this was the reason why he is quitting at this point. Destroying the own body at his age. Good decision to work as a coach, Knittel is a nice guy and i am sure young players can learn a lot of things with him as a coach. I really look forward to his last tournament but i will be in Melbourne till 22/01 and i am not sure if he will pass the first round in Heilbronn. Shame.

His game is very all-round, but not good enough in any one aspect IMO to reach the ranking you think would have been possible. Irrespective, it's sad to see a career ended prematurely by injuries (even if he isn't a spring chicken).

Mies a no name player. I see you are an expert.

Andreas Mies played College Tennis for Auburn and gained ITA-All American status in doubles. For example he and his partner defeated Jarmere Jenkins and Mac Styslinger. He was ranked #2 in doubles in the nation with his doubles partner Cochrane. Reached the SF of the USTA National Indoor Champ. ...
Had a very good record in singles, too.
I don't know how somebody can call him "a no name player".

He is a no-name player He has pretty good results in doubles in Futures (which is not that great a feat), but in singles his results are not great. For Nekic to go from destroying Marie - someone with a strong record in Futures - to losing in straight sets to this guy is surprising. Nekic's record in ITF events is also much stronger than that of Mies.
