Great stuff from Gilles!
Win or lose, hopefully this will be the turning point of his season.
In my heart I want to believe that, but my gut tells me that this will be ultimately no different than it was when he played amazingly against Murray a few months ago for a set and half and then lost. I think if he had won this match, which he should've, then it would've made a difference for him and his confidence, but as it is, I see it as nothing more than Gilles getting himself geared up for a big match in a big stage. He's a big match player and loves those moments, but struggles with the day to day grind otherwise these days. I want to be wrong but I don't think so.
idk if it's that similar to the Murray match, Gilles served for that whereas tonight he wasn't that close to winning and he definitely sustained a higher level for longer tonight. Great fight from him.
This was much better than the Murray match. Really incredible level from Gilles at times. Now it's time to build some confidence at Nice.
It's not about which match he played better tennis in or sustained a higher level for longer in. It's about what both matches and their respective outcomes symbolize. The bigger picture so to speak. Lack of self belief/confidence cost him big time in both matches. He's still struggling.
Great match from him today, many good shots (particularly Dtl fh) and scrambling from the baseline, he had nothing to lose and so his flat hitting worked well.
I hope he can take confidence from this match.
As a Simon fan this loss is hard to take. A win over a world-number-1 (and Nadal on clay no less) would have been a great moment for Gilles. Oh well... Things could get very interesting at Roland Garros if he keeps that level up. Pushed Federer to 5 sets in 2013, hopefully we can look forward to equal drama this year.
Didn't get to watch it, but just read the first 2 pages of the thread in GM, it seems he played great. But it's true that it feel like the same old story of him playing great but not closing things out. Oh well, at least he played well, it could have been worse. At this slump of his, being able to play a good level is important, hopefully will help him to feel better of himself and maybe that will get him back on the right track.
