Actually Julio - I was laughing - had a dreadful fit of the giggles - if you diidn't laugh - you cried!!!!! Anyway - match report...............
David v Baghdatis
Well - OK - what it there is say about the 1st set. David came out tense, nervous and tentative - he was very stressed and tentative in practice so that didn't much surprise me. Markos was just having one of those "purple patches" where he could do nothing wrong - every shot he hit was a winner -David didn't stand a chance. Don't think either of them could believe what was happening - Markos was laughing - even David was laughing - before he did his usual racquet throwing and swearing!!! Markos' coach was just behind us - he and his crowd are very noisy - VERY noisy
Anyway - second set - David was still nervous - I think he thought he had lost, - but then Markos started missing a few easy shots (no one can keep that standard up for a whole match - he was superhuman in the 1st set!), and David took advantage. It was close - David was somewhat lucky to take that set - the match would have been over if he had not I think.
3rd set was easier for David - Markos was a bit tired - his shots were just missing the lines whereas before they were just making them. David won that set easily - though have to say he couldn't serve the set out even at 5-2 up
4th set - well - very stressful. David got broken early on, then broke back, then he broke Markos and got broken himself. It was very tense and error strewn, but in the end he won as you all know.
All in all - much closer than it should have been - but you tend to get used to that with David over years!!!! Markos is an interesting player to watch - very flashy and flamboyant - gives it everything and wears his "heart on his sleeve"! Reminded me a lot of Gonzalez. He was very fair minded and sporting - in fact they both were - there were quite a few dodgy line calls in that match (and a particularly evil foot-fault judge!), and both David and Markos conceded points to each other - it was played in a great spirit which was nice to see.
Btw - memo to FFT - please no more Court 6
And if you do put "big" matches on stupid little courts - please, PLEASE make sure there are seats for all of Team "N"!!! It really is not fair to split them up and cause them such undue stress!!!!!
Finally - just wanted to say how nice it was to finally meet up with 3 lovely MTF people - Ilhame (Maratski), Ava (Mrs. B), and Michelle (michelleg). It was a pleaseure to meet all of you -
And safe journey back to England tomorrow to Louise and family, Chris and Debbie
