Quote:
“I really didn’t see it coming,” replies a thoughtful and pensive Sampras, who conveys no self-pity about the chain of events. “I didn’t know what was next in the game and who was going to dominate, but if you would have said eleven years later that there would be two great players with 17 majors and 13 majors--and I really feel like Novak when he is done could very well have double digits—that would then be three players with double digit majors, and I wouldn’t have predicted that. I feel like in my time there were more major winners. It just seemed it was harder for me to dominate. There were some dark horses that were tough for me.” ~ Sampras
I agree with him. In my opinion:

'90-'00 Sampras + Agassi + Edberg + Becker + Courier + Rafter + Bruguera + Kafelnikov + Kuerten + one time winners (Muster, Moya, Krajicek, Korda, Gómez)

>

'03-'13 Federer + Nadal + Djokovic + Murray + Hewitt + Safin + one time winners (Roddick, Del Potro, Gaudio, Ferrero)

The 'Big 4' all have a higher peak than the 90's players (with the possible exception of Sampras), but below them the pool of talent is woefully inferior to what it was in the 90's. None of the players outside the 'Big 4' today have the necessary ability (and self-belief) to get through the top players and win a Slam, whereas in the 90's you knew there were multiple players who - on their best day - could beat literally anyone (and go on to lift the trophy).

not sure if pete would really use one of those babolat racquets. sure he could get some extra pop, particularly from the bh, but the precision and control is not in the same stratosphere as the pro staff 85. i mean, if he can serve and volley vs. agassi of all people with an 85, why switch? even with federer using the 90 and many years past his prime, still he is right there with nadal and joker

Yes, because it's not like Roger has 17 slams or anything. Quit trolling dude, it's boring.

Pistol Mugpras would have beat Nadal 6-0 6-0 6-0 at Wimbledon 97'

there's now denying it

I'm no Fakervic fan but he needs to save tennis, sadly tree trunk legs will be fresh. Interesting he's never questioned...

That's not even remotely a dig on Ferrer, Berdych and Tsonga though, just the truth. Though I'll say he's being a little harsh that the latter two can't "scare" the top guys, they can on their day, they just can't go all the way.

With Rafa, as great as he moves I would have gotten him off the court a little easier than I could have with Novak. I would get in and serve-and-volley on both serves with Rafa staying so far back on his returns.

Most of this is vanilla, surface-level stuff that's been reiterated by every tennis aficionado looking to hype up the game over the past year or so. What's he really saying here? Nadal's a great competitor. Novak's a great athlete. These two are dominating the top of the game because everyone does the same things but they do it better.

I'm a little thrown by his dismissal of Muzz though. He's won as many Majors as Novak in the last two years, and has done so, unlike Djokovic, at two different arenas. I understand he's been injured, and I understand his legacy sits well behind either Novak and Nadal right now, but I don't see that as any means to dismiss him from the conversation.

Also silly to see him talk about Roger being somewhat adverse to coming in when some of his most effective plays this year have been built around approaching the net.

I think he's right that the net isn't Federer's comfort zone.

Obviously it's not, but to act as though he's adverse to it is misleading, and that's exactly what he does by suggesting that Roger isn't looking to come in too much.

Working the angles: opening up the court for a put-away at net; that's been one of Fed's primary means of staying competitive this season. It's been quite a bit more efficient than going for broke from the back of the court.

Regarding the whole "harder to dominate" bit. He's right, it was. Today, the greatest players are the greatest anywhere. Back then, surfaces were polarizing, and being hot stuff at RG didn't mean you were a favorite to win Wimbledon. It is what it is.

At the same time, I highly doubt Sampras would have been nearly as dominant in this era as any one of Fed, Nadal or Djokovic. Ignoring the dynamics of his playing style even. Sampras just wasn't as consistent as any of these guys. He lost to dudes he had no business losing to, even on surfaces that favored him. He had his off days. He had distinct weaknesses. Things that subdued his dominance independent of his competition.

Furthermore, there's a lot of subjection that goes into what constitutes who's era, etc., but taken by decade, the numerous regarding Major winners in the 90's and in the 2000's are largely similar:

Sampras: 12
Agassi: 5
Courier: 4
Edberg: 3
Becker, Bruguera, Kafelnikov, Rafter: 2
Gomez, Korda, Krajicek, Kuerten, Lendl, Moya, Muster, Stich: 1

2000s:
Federer: 15
Nadal: 6
Agassi: 3
Hewitt, Safin, Sampras, Kuerten: 2
Costa, Del Potro, Djokovic, Ferrero, Gaudio, Ivanisevic, Johansson, Roddick: 1

The current decade, which has thus far been solely dominated by Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray, has not been long underway and is subject to expansion at some point.
