They want Rafa to win it because ATP deems tennis a girly sport and girls love Rafa.

As it should be.

When Hewitt was near the top of the game they did everything they could to accommodate his game, they should be doing the same for Stosur since 3 years ago.

Good for Nadal, too

Aussie open was always going to be more bouncy anyways regardless of the ball they used... lively balls typically equate to those that are lighter and travel through the air faster and typically help servers and power players the most like a del potro.

Dont think this helps nadal bc it will make retrieving harder and they sped up the aussie courts another 5-10% again this year plus they are adding faster balls. Not sure if the 5-10% speed bump is with the new balls or just the court surface alone.

Not too suprising bc the tournament supervisor or head is one of the biggest proponents of speeding up the courts as he did last year and was saying he would keep doing it every year. He was ecstatic with the response from shanghai speeding up the courts as well.

Expect a faster australian open at baseline with the court alone being at least last years speed or a touch (5-10%) faster. Then add the lighter, faster balls.
Should also add this year may be one of the hotter ones in some time.

hope to see some exciting offensive tennis for once.

Lively balls means more advantage for serve and flat striking, while slower balls means more retrieved balls and less serve advantage, which is what the main guys' advantage comes from.

More lively balls sounds to me as advantage for serve bots, aggressive players and technical shot makers, so Todd's assumption might be actually wrong.

If i had to chose the balls to play a solid retriever, i'd take the fasted balls possible, so i can put him under pressure starting with the serve and take advantage a bit easier from longer rallies, where taking the BH on the rise puts him a bit in uncomfortable position.

coz with fluffier dead balls there's nothing an attacking player can do against a very good retriever.
Agreed. More pace and less advantage for retrievers/defenders.

This ought to help players like Del Potro, Roanic etc.

The difference will probably be pretty small however, the top players can handle those changes easily.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know the AO organizers were so keen on speeding up the courts. I prefer med-fast and fast courts too. However, if they take it too far, the courts might end up playing exactly like the USO courts (not a positive as it reduces the diversity IMO).

The increase in the court speed will definitely help Delpo, Fed and probably Andy too. Between Rafa and Nole, I personally think it'd favor Rafa more as Nole is the biggest (and best) retriever on HC on the ATP tour. Rafa has previously mentioned that he gets more purchase for his shots on slightly faster surfaces with consistent bounce (I guess he means med-fast not really fast and low-bouncing). If the rumors are all true, 2014's conditions might me ideal for him to put up a good fight against Plexicushionovic

Why would he retire? I can see Rafa playing on his one knee (lol) for another 15 years. People will continue to claim he is slowing down, will slow down, ... and he will continue getting more lively balls in these events with cupcake draws. I can see him winning 25 slams. Of course, they are fake slams but still. His whole career is a big hoax foisted upon us by girly men at ATP and their lively balls.

I like how they pretend it's about Stosur As if another mental WTA mug has a chance outside her own head.

Wonder how much money and influence it took to shame Sampras into presenting the trophy to Nadull and humiliating his record. They are taking no chances this year
