Without checking, isn't Rafter a two time GS champion?

Checking, yes he is. Two US Opens.

Leave it, just leave it, you're never going to win.

1. Roddick was the latest from this group to retire and he is most fresh in people's eyes, especially the younger posters.

2. Roddick was American and they have bigger and more global ways of hyping a player up for better than he is.

3. When you think of Roddick, after his won grandslam what springs to mind are all the scintalitating shots and point constructing brilliancies Federer used to school him with.

4. His pranks, media outbursts and fact he carried American tennis for somany years make him seem better than he was.

5. People obsess over stats and will always make the grandslam final argument even though other than Federer, the field wasn't drastically difficult.

IMO, Del Potro and Pat Rafter are the two greatest.

Achievements aside, I'd say Del Potro is the best player. I can see him doing better than Roddick had they've been peers in the Federer/Hewitt/Safin/Nalbandian era.

Michael Stich:
-18 tournaments (4X hc, 3X clay, 3X grass, 7X carpet)
-1X Wimbledon, 1X US Open final, 1X French Open final, 1X Aussie Open semi
-1X olympic gold medal double, 1X WTF, 2X Masters, rank number 2 in 1993

He was a serve and volley-player but succesful on all surfaces, which was very unlikely in these days. A reason why I gave hime the vote instead of Roddick, who deserved it aswell, but Stich with the more prestigous wimbledon + olympic gold + WTF and French Open final (roddick was far far away from that) got the edge for me

Michael Stich is an interesting as you wrote he was successful on all surfaces, maybe suffers from being a quieter player compared to Goran.

Sund7101 is on a distinguished road
Default Re: Who is the greatest player in the Open Era with one Grand Slam?

Even though he was never ranked #1, my vote goes to Chang.

1 slam, finals of 3 others (Aussie, French, and US), 7 masters series titles.

34 Titles overall and youngest ever grand slam champion in the Open Era.

Roddick 100% by a big margin
followed by Chang
everyone else is quite far behind

Roddick has the overall titles, bunch of GS finals, top 10 for like 10 years straight, etc.

also Roddick was by far the closest of all of these to be a multi-grand slam winner and frankly if he had played smarter in a few moments he definitely should have been

unlike these others players, if you put Roddick in a different generation he undoubtedly would have had more slams. Federer was an awful matchup for him and frankly the best player of all time and the same age

what????
Roddick has world #1 ranking, a bunch of GS finals, bunch of Master 1000 titles, played in a better era (yes Federer's prime years were more competitive / higher quality than today)
Roddick won a title every year from 2001-2012
Roddick was a great player
Roddick is hugely underrated on this forum and in general
Roddick is a prime example of a great player under-performing although much of this was the fault of Federer

del Potro. He beat the strongest opponents to win his Slam out of all 1-time winners.
