I get the feeling he wasn't giving much thought to his answers. Seemingly he's frustrated with the French journalists. I agree with you, rather idiotic questions.

Richard already hitting in Perth

Quote:
FRENCHMAN Richard Gasquet had his first hit-up in Perth today ahead of a summer campaign he believes will return him to the world's elite.

Gasquet took to the court with local world No.86 Matt Ebden at the State Tennis Centre in Burswood as they prepared for their respective summers, with Gasquet's beginning on Saturday at the Hyundai Hopman Cup.

Gasquet blasted his way to a career-high world No.7 in 2007 off the back of the hardcourt title in Mumbai, a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon and reaching the Round of 16 at the Australian Open.

The right-hander's end of year ranking gradually slipped from there to bottom out at 52 in 2009, a year in which he was hampered by a shoulder injury and, most damaging, a false positive test for cocaine that sidelined him for months.

The 25-year-old has since rebuilt his charge to currently sit at No.19, with a return to the top 10 in sight.

"I will try and break into the top 10, I did it some years ago and I'm not far this year too," Gasquet said.

"I think I will be able to do it this year in 2012.

"I've never played here (Perth), it's good to practice, it's good to prepare and to get ready for Melbourne.

"I played a lot in Brisbane and I wanted to change it a little bit.

"I'm only young, so I wanted to try different things, I've played indoor last year (in the leadup to the Australian Open)."

Gasquet said the opportunity to hit with Ebden in preparation for France's opening tie against China was one he could not pass up.

The pair have faced off twice before, with Gasquet first winning in the second round of the Brisbane International in 2010, before again triumphing this year in Sydney.

Ebden's year will begin in Brisbane, where he will attempt to replicate his stellar march from this year when he stormed through the qualifying draw to reach the quarterfinals.

"It's nice to play with him, he's a great player and 80 in the world," Gasquet said.

"He's still young, so it's good for me to practice with him and he's one of the best in Australia.

"I'm really happy to be here and I came early, because I play Saturday, so I will try and prepare well.

"It's always tough when you're coming from another place to Australia (because of the heat).

"I played one time in mixed doubles and I won Roland Garros, so I think I like it, I've never lost in the mixed doubles."

Gasquet will partner Marion Bartoli at the Hopman Cup. France's first match is against China, featuring French Open champion Li Na, on Saturday.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet has set his sights on getting back into the world's top 10 during 2012 and to begin that quest he is excited to be teaming with world No. 9 Marion Bartoli in his first appearance in Perth at the Hyundai Hopman Cup.

Gasquet is one of the best ball strikers in the world, especially on his backhand side, and without doubt the fans inside the Burswood Dome and watching at home on ONE will get plenty of joy from watching him in action at the Hopman Cup for the first time.

Coming from the Paris winter where he was practicing indoors to the heat of Western Australia's scorching summer has certainly taken Gasquet some time to adjust to as well, but he's now feeling good and looking forward to France's opening Tie now on Saturday against China.

"It’s always tough when you come from zero degrees to Australia, you know in the outdoors," Gasquet said.

"I play indoors in Paris so it’s always difficult but I am really happy to be here. I came early because I play Saturday, so I will try to prepare well and to get ready for Saturday."

It might be the beginning of the tennis season, but Gasquet feels in good touch and is glad to be playing at the Hopman Cup for the first time to start off his year in a new way.

Considering he will not only have singles hit outs against China's Wu Di, but also Spaniard Fernando Verdasco and Australia's Lleyton Hewitt he is certainly looking forward to the work out he will get this week.

"I have been practicing well and I have played a lot since winter in Paris, so I have no injuries. I hope I will play very good here in Perth," he said.

"I have never played here. It’s nice conditions, it’s good to prepare and it’s good to get ready for Melbourne, so that’s why I came here to play in Hopman Cup.

"I’ve played a lot in Brisbane, I’ve played two or three times, so I wanted to change a little bit. I’m young, 25, so I wanted to try something different, so I plan a change and it’s very good to be here."

While certainly not an experienced campaigner in mixed doubles, Gasquet did play it at Roland Garros in 2004 and won alongside Tatiana Golovin, so he will certainly be hoping to revive some of that form this week teaming with Bartoli.

"It’s true I played one time in mixed doubles, I won, and I won Roland Garros so I think I like it," he said.

"I’ve never lost in mixed doubles, so yeah I am confident with mixed doubles for sure."

As for his ambitions in 2012, Gasquet would certainly like to get back into the world's top 10. He has been there before and in fact was ranked as high as No. 7 back in 2007.

The 25-year-old not only possesses perhaps the best one-handed backhand in the game, but a strong overall game as well and after a solid 2011 season, there's no reason he can't achieve what he wants during 2012 either.

"I will try to break into the top 10," he said.

"I did it some years ago and I was not far off this year too, so I think I am able to do it again this year in 2012."

Gasquet has also spent some time this week in Perth hitting with West Australian world No. 80 Matthew Ebden and he has enjoyed that experience.

"Yeah for sure it’s nice to play with him, he’s a great player – he’s 80 in the world," Gasquet said.

"So he’s still young and it’s good fun to practice with him. He’s one of the best in Australia, so for sure it’s good to practice with this kind of guy."

"There are too many times in matches when I don't attack," Gasquet told Reuters Thursday.

"Sometimes it is in my nature to sit back and wait for an error from the guy I'm playing," he added.

"When the big moments come, I need to have the confidence to do what Roger (Federer), Novak (Djokovic) and Rafa (Nadal) do... they attack.

"I am getting there. To beat Fernando is a big step in the right direction, he's one of the best players in the world."

Post-match interview after beating Tipsarevic, 21 January 2012

Q. Richard, you played beautifully today. How did you feel on the court?

RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I felt well because I start well. I broke him early in the match. I think it was important for me. I served well. I won 6‑3, 6‑3. After, he lost a little bit his confidence. I felt well, as I said. No, I played a good match. It's good for me to win in three sets. I'm very happy to be in fourth round.

Q. Is your confidence rising when you play that well?

RICHARD GASQUET: For sure, I think I play very well with my serve and my backhand. I try to change the rhythm on my strokes. No, it work a lot. I'm very happy to be in the fourth.

Q. There's a lot of French players in the draw this year. Do you all get around and help each other and support each other at the slams?

RICHARD GASQUET: For sure, they're friends. They're my friends. So, yeah, for sure I support them. I hope we will go farther in the tournament. It's starting to be more difficult and difficult. We try our best to go further in the draw.

Q. How do you see your chances going far into your home slam, Roland Garros?

RICHARD GASQUET: I played well last year. I think I had good matches against great players. I will try to go farther. I'm sure I can be better this year. It's very good for us to play at home. It's the best sensation you can have. I will try this year to be better than the fourth round.

Q. Do you feel more pressure there than you do playing here?

RICHARD GASQUET: A little bit more. But now I'm older, so less than before, for sure. But, yeah, you want to play well because it's in Paris. But it's always a big pleasure to play there.

A lot of dumb/irrelevant questions.. I mean he is still playing in AO and they are asking about RG..?? and the "pressure of playing in Paris" questions are really really old.

For once, a rather interesting article about Richard on French Eurosport: It talks about him always having a low profile, others projecting expectations on him, about him being less shy in private than in public or with journalists. Quétin reports about the physical work done during his ellbow injury and that he stopped drinking coke and that he is now taking care about his food. Finally, Piatti explains his simple philosophy: making Richard work hard and play as well in matches as he does in practise.
