A very good argument there, but I am not talking of riches, just the increased cost of living. Over the 20 years petrol has doubled in price, airfares are more expensive, hotels cost more. The ITF management no doubt get increases every year to counter inflation, but the players they are promoting make a loss every year. Time just to match inflation.

The ITF should

The Australian Open ALONE went up $4 million in prizemoney in ONE YEAR! ITF hasn't gone up in 20 years at all! Stop the slams increasing their prizemoney and put it into ITFs for the next 5 years or something! Slams are ITF's too, remember?! And also, most players who can play the slams have endorsements of some sort.

Anyone know who got the final Sydney Wildcard? Groth, Mitchell and Duckworth are all missing from the qualifying draw. I presume Kyrigios and Jones are injured. Given the qualifying draw in Auckland its a shame a few Australians didn't go over there and try there luck.

Greg Jones did so well in New Zealand last year......coming through qualifying and beating Jurgen Melzer. He is set to lose a lot of points. I did note on his facebook the other day asking for practice partners in Melbourne.Hope he comes back strongly.

Off topic (WTA) but just pointing out that Ajla Tomjlanovic got a MDWC into Sydney which I thought was weird - then I saw saw DAVID TAYLOR in her box today. Should WC's really be going to people that Australian's are coaching? I don't care that she beat Hantuchova.

If we have spare WC's we should arrange reciprical agreements with countries that have tournaments later in the year where Barty etc. could benefit from a MDWC. Watson and Goerges played quallies, a recipricol WC to either of them could have seen an Australia get a WC into Birmingham or Stuttgart.

As if David Taylor didn't pull strings to get Ajla that WC. So dumb of TA to grant her one.

I would rather Monique or Arina (who were in qualies).. even though they'd get smoked it would be some consolation for not getting an AO WC and give them some money, encouragement and that feeling of support from their country.

I agree. I think it was a ridiculous decision to give the wild card to the Croatian girl. What do we have to gain? Nothing.......poor old Sydneysider Monique would have been a much more worthy recipient. I dont care that she beat Hantuchova either. I am going to write a complaining email which will never be answered but I am going to anyhow. Oddly on the Womens tennis forums there are many posters in support of this wildcard which I could not understand. David Taylor must have some clout.

exactly

i find this very weird, especially in Australia, from where the flights are so expensive, to not give some support to these girls who are at decent level, so they could play another season representing the country

good that at least Olivia Rogowska used her WC and won a round she's such a nice person

regarding TA website, i'll never forget how they were looking for professional journalists to volunteer as press office crew at TA's events, incl. AO, where the reward would be "meeting top players". They probably also looked for volunteer designers and programmers, which resulted in finding a highschool geek kid of average level.

regarding ITF, yes, their income comes from slams and it also comes from selling rights to the bookmakers to livescore the events. i really think they're keeping deal with the bookmakers to force players into being in such dreadful financial conditions that they're more prone for fix/tank temptations, which normally they wouldn't do. i know it sounds slanderous but i have no other explanation; otherwise something would have been done about it already; it's not like tennis experts haven't been metioning it all the time in the last years anytime some Panfil shows up here or there

Given the qualifying draw is later this afternoon I can only assume they will announce the wildcards today.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's no announcement and we just see them in the draw...

As expected Duckworth, Kyrgios, Kokkinakis and Groth got the wildcards. Good choices.

Spot on haha. The qualifying draw is out and available at http://www.ausopen.com/en_AU/scores/draws/qs/qsdraw.pdf.

The QWCs went to Bolt, Harris, Santillan, Mott, Saville, Mousley, Polmans and Whittington (though as someone pointed out earlier, Mousley got his by winning the 18 and under championships rather than at TA's discretion). TA's clearly gone with a youth policy - Bolt is the oldest of the bunch at 21.

Awful day for the Aussies at AO quallies - 1 from 10 so far with just Andrew Harris progressing (straight sets win over Vagnozzi). I'm not a massive fan of TA giving out wildcards to local players that are quite frankly not ready, particularly when guys like Coric, Garin, Quinzi and Khachanov are missing out.

With Millman injured, this year's wild card selections must have been the easiest in years.
