Default 2014 Aussie Summer wildcard discussion.

Got this idea from women's tennis forum. Who do you guys think will get the wildcards this summer.

Brisbane: Nick Kyrgios (confirmed) Matt Ebden. James Duckworth.

Nick has already been confirmed. Ebden I think will get one after a good end to the year getting back into the top 100. Last one I think will go to Duckworth after a solid year.

Sydney: Matt Ebden James Duckworth/Nick Kyrgios Matt Reid

I think who ever performs better in Brisbane out of Duckworth and Kyrgios will get one in Sydney. I would like to see Matt Reid get one but not sure he will.

Australian Open: playoff winner. Kyrgios. Duckworth. Kokkinakks. Groth/Reid.

Australians could be messed over big time by the cut offs.

Last direct acceptance for Brisbane this year was ranked 66 at entry (Ito).
Last direct acceptance for Sydney this year was ranked 52 at entry (Tomic).

Current ranking of Australia's top 3:
Tomic 52
Hewitt 62
Matosevic 63

So here's hoping that Tomic gets direct acceptance into Sydney and Hewitt and Matosevic get direct acceptance into Brisbane. If this occurs, Australia will have a better representation in both events.

IMO the "older" players not ranked under say 150 will not be considered for the AO wild card, dependant on who reaches the AO WC Play-off final.
"Older" - list Sam Groth, JP Smith, Greg Jones and Matt Reid (Reid borderline)

In contention - definates are Kyrgios and Duckworth - which leaves two WC's to be between Kokkinakis, Barton, Mitchell, Saville, Bolt and Jordan Thompson.

So - for the AO WC - my pick:
Kygios
Duckworth
Kokkinakis (AO Junior Final last year and huge potential)

the last is difficult -
Barton - performed well at beginning of year but done nothing sonce then, and currently injured but will end yeara ranked around 255 - but not on TA radar
Mitchell - not sure of his remaining schedule this year but will end the year ranked well below 300 (still has 28 pts to defend) - so don't think Mitchell
Bolt - with 40 pts still to defend this year has the potential to end year worse than 400 - so don't think Bolt
Saville - not sure of his remaining schedule this year but ranked just 439 - so don't think Saville
Thompson - has surprised the pundits this year and has risen spectacularly up the rankings to finish the year ranked around 308 or better - could be the surprise

With Millman still out injured - it does then come back to who of the "Oldies" performs best in the last Challengers of the year - Smith, Groth or Reid (presume Jones out with injury)
Smith - unspectacular results this year, won Canada Futures and 2x Challenger semis, has US College tennis backing
Groth - unspectacular results this year, won Aus Futues in Marach and 2x Challenger semis, qualied for Washington, has big crowd appeal because of serve
Reid - his best year on tour, has risen up the rankings, qualied for Wimbledon and made final of Sydney Challenger in Feb, youngest of this group
Jones - if injury ok and fit to play, had a solid year rising over 120 places in ranking, made final of Challenger, won Sydney Futures in Oct, qualied and made second round of ATP250 in Auckland (beat two 100 ranked players 29 & 99) - but not on TA radar (did not get WC into AO qualies last year)

So the last WC in my opinion open for any of the players ranked below say 350, Depends on who plays and does the best in AO WC or Brisbane qualies.
Groth or Reid my pick.

Whilst on the subject - Doubles pairings and WC's ?

Rumour has it Lleyton to play with Rafter (heard it here first)

It would be good to see Reid get a few especially after last summer and wimbledon this year.

IMO Smith won't get a WC to any of the tournaments. I think someone needs to tell him to concentrate on doubles like Peers has done. I don't think he has the game to make it near the top 100 in singles, and I reckon TA thinks the same.

He's preparing for qualifying. Seems like he isn't that confident. My picks: Duckworth, Millman (if fit), Kyrgios, AO Playoff and Reid. TA will give Reid one after his effort in Wimbledon.

Brisbane organizers are keeping a wildcard for Andy Murray if he wants one.

Reid has had some awful losses recently. He has had an okay year but I dont think he deserves one. Kyrgios, Kokkinakis and Duckworth all deserve one for the AO and other events where possible. I think Groth has shown the most improvement and consistency and deserves a AO main draw wildcard.

I can't see any of Mitchell, Smith or Saville getting anything but qualifying wildcards where needed. Id expect Mott, Whittington and Thompson will get qualifying wildcards where possible.

Just heard it through the grape-vine, being talked about by the DC coaches and players.

Not sure why Rafter would play...

Perhaps he thinks there is nobody else in Oz tennis worth having a go with Lleyton; it is good for marketing tennis; it is good for his ego; Lleytons last slam in Oz ?

IMO he is taking an opportunity away from other (up and coming) Aussies, shows no faith in the other Aussies...

Lleyton has committed to a full year 2014. So he wouldn't retire at the end of 2014 when he could just stay on a few weeks to play the AO 2015. If anything, he'd retire after that.

I hope Rafter plays doubles with Lleyton. It would be for entertainment and fun and he would easily fill MCA for the doubles match. It's not like he'd be trying to get a DC spot himself. Do it Pat!

Seriously ?
NO, seriously ?
You want to watch old men's tennis ?
Go watch the Masters tennis circuit.
I'd rather watch the good guys, rather than ageing men like Rafter.

Next you'd want to watch him play in his "comfy undies"...
