Australian Open 2012: Rafael Nadal Calls Out Roger Federer Over Player Issues
Jan15
10:41a
by Louis Bien

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are on a collision course to meet in the semifinals of the 2012 Australian Open after being paired on the same side of the bracket. The two tennis legends may also be butting heads off the court, as well. Nadal took Federer to task before the start of the tournament, calling him out for not being vocal enough on player issues.

At the heart of the spat is the demanding schedule that professional tennis players have to endure. Andy Murray recently threatened to strike if tennis' governing bodies, the ATP and ITF, didn't consider shortening the season or eliminating a few tournaments. Nadal has been outspoken on the issue as well, and thinks Federer should be too.

"We each have our opinion and maybe he [Federer] likes the circuit," Nadal said. "Me too, I like it, and I think it's better than most sports. That does not mean you cannot be better and that you should [not] change things that are bad."

He added:

"I say a lot of good things about tennis, because thanks to this sport I have had experiences in my life I could never have dreamed of, but to finish your career with pain in all areas of your body is not positive. He finishes his career as fresh as a daisy because he is physically privileged, but neither Murray nor [Novak] Djokovic and I are fresh as a daisy."

The typically level-headed Federer has yet to respond. There is a good chance he will wait and let his play on the court do the talking. Either way, one of the best rivalries in tennis should be a little more interesting this year.

Pre-Event Interview

Quote:
Q. Just let us know how you're feeling, how your preparation has been for the Australian Open.

RAFAEL NADAL: I believe good. I didn't have the perfect preparation in Mallorca during December because I had the problem with my shoulder. I had injury for two weeks. But after that I started very slow in Abu Dhabi, and in Doha I felt much better than what I thought. It was a very positive tournament for me.

I'm very happy about the week here.

Q. Did you have time to relax? Do you find the pleasure to be on court again?

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't have the pleasure to be on court? Relax when you're on court?

Q. In London during the Masters, you were a bit exhausted, tired of the whole season.

RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, I said. But I was going to take more care about what I going to say now in the press conference because after what I say in London, in every press conference the people ask about what I say there. What I say there is I played a few matches at the end of the season with less passion than usual. That's nothing crazy. That happens when you are a little bit more tired than usual. Maybe you're not doing your job all the time with the same passion because you're tired. That's part of the job.

I'm here in Australia 2012 with big motivation, with big passion, and trying to enjoy the previous weeks. I did. I'm happy. I am practicing well. I'm enjoying everything. I will try to be ready for tomorrow.

Q. Any comment on these reports of a possible players strike around the share of prize money given to players and Davis Cup commitments as well?

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't have any thoughts about that. I am here to support what most of the players think. But I not going to be the one who going to talk about these things, especially because I am always the one and I am tired.

Q. Obviously it was Novak's year last year. Are you confident you can turn the tables this year with him, possibly starting here?

RAFAEL NADAL: There is a lot of fantastic players around, no? Novak is the best because last year he did fantastic year. He's the No. 1 today. He deserve to be there. I will be here fighting in every moment to try to compete against everybody with positive chances of victory, no?

That's just the beginning of the season. I will try to improve a few things that probably I will need. Just happy to, you know, be here in 2012 to start another season with good conditions. That's what I can say, no?

I am healthy. That's the first thing, the first important thing. Without that, you cannot think about next things. I am healthy and I am ready to work hard.

Q. Did you have to say at the meeting last night, Sorry, guys, I'm not going to be the one leading this? At the US Open you were identified as someone who took the initiative.

RAFAEL NADAL: Nothing of strikes. I never take any initiative. I never say anything about strike. I never did.

Q. Last night did you have to say to the guys, I'm not going to be the public face?

RAFAEL NADAL: No. I gived to the rest of the tennis player, like another guys did, my opinion, and that's it.

Q. Were you happy with what was discussed and what was decided at the meeting?

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know what's decided.

Q. Were you happy with the way the discussion went and what people were saying?

RAFAEL NADAL: I say before, something that happens in the meetings. Everybody have, you know, different thoughts. This time believe a lot of players have similar thoughts.

But I say before, everything that I will say, you know, will write in your words, and I don't want you to write nothing in your words.

I'm the one who in the past talk a lot about the calendar, talk a lot about the Davis Cup, talk a lot about the problem with the US Open. Now I not going to be the one who keep talking about a lot of things because finally if we have the right guys there to fight for us, maybe, but today we don't have that.

Q. If it's not going to be you talking, is there a player taking a leadership role in this movement?

RAFAEL NADAL: First thing, you are talking about movement. I don't know which 'movement'. I don't know what's going to happen.

That's a sport that's an individual sport. So when you are talking about individual sport, what must happen if there is 100, if a super majority thinks one thing, the rest of the players have to support that.

So if a super majority thinks one thing, I will support them that's all in anything. Not in a strike, not in calendar, in anything, because I understand democracy is like this.

Q. When you say you do not want to be seen as the leader...

RAFAEL NADAL: I am not. I don't want to be seen and I am not (laughter).

Q. But are you saying that because after what happened in New York, you were criticized by people for that?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, no, no. You know, when you are talking about Davis Cup, when you are talking about Grand Slams, when you are talking about calendar, when you are talking about a lot of things that can be better for the tour, a lot thinks, most of the players thinks that's the right way. That is not happening. That's talk for talk.

I want to talk when we have real chances to make that happen. When we don't have chances to make that happen, because with how the world of tennis is working today, we don't have any chance on changes because we don't have the support of the structure.

I repeat, is talk for you. I give information for you to write newspapers. But at the end of the day I look like I am the one who always talk about things that must change, and I don't win nothing on that. I just lose time, energy, and the people can think that he's always the one who says the bad things, the negative things.

If I win something on that, I will keep talking. If I don't win something on that, when a lot of things happen, I will not tell you for sure in the past. We are not in that way to change situations even with the support of the super majority of the players. Even like that we didn't win nothing. Sorry, I am tired of keep working on these things.

Q. Are you happy with the changes you made in your racquet?

RAFAEL NADAL: I will tell you in a few months. In theory, yes, I am. I am happy, no? I did that because we believe that can be a really positive thing to help me in a few aspects of my game. It's working well in practice. In Doha I had really positive feelings.

Q. The changes that you've made, does it make things very different or is it just a tiny bit of difference for you?

RAFAEL NADAL: In the racquet?

Q. Yes.

RAFAEL NADAL: No. You cannot make crazy changes having two weeks of preparation to start another season. These are small changes. You cannot have drastic changes in nothing in your life. All the changes must be slow.

Q. I mean, the way that it feels to you.

RAFAEL NADAL: If I don't feel something, if I don't feel nothing, obviously I will not change nothing.

But is always a change and you feel a little bit. At the beginning was a little bit harder. After two weeks and a half practicing every day with toplevel guys, players, every day for a long time, the feeling is quite normal.

Q. In which way is it different? Is it more heavy? What is different?

RAFAEL NADAL: That gives you a little bit more power. That's all. Nothing. It's three more grams. But three more grams probably on the size of the racquet doesn't feel for changes. But three more grams just on the top of the racquet makes a change.

For a few balls, for the higher balls, you can hit the ball, you know, with a little bit more flat because the racquet goes faster into the ball. The racquet goes quicker.

The normal thing when you have a change like this, you lose a little bit of control in the beginning, you win a little bit more power at the beginning. At the end, after a few months, you feel like is your racquet. Nothing change.

Q. Every player is looking for a small percentage of improvement in their game, in their attitude. How fascinated are you by Andy Murray's decision to bring Ivan Lendl back into the game?

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know. I don't know Ivan Lendl like a coach so cannot talk about Ivan Lendl like a coach. Like a player, everybody knows was one of the top of the history players. Like a coach, I never was in a tennis court like with him practicing.

You know, sounds very good. We will see how gonna works. But I wish him all the best, for sure. I like Andy. I think he's great. You know, if he decide to do these changes because he believes that can help him, hopefully will.

Q. Is it still part of your plan to take time off after this event?

RAFAEL NADAL: Yes. My plan is this one. After, if I lose tomorrow, you never know. That's the tennis. That's not football that you have your matches, your calendar. Here your calendar is every day. It's not depends of how many events you play, it depends how many matches you play.

I think Rafa’s English breaks down when he is talking about things other than playing tennis. His vocabulary is narrow.

Quote:
Q. Could you give us a little sense of how the courts are playing here this year. Are they a little slower than last year, perhaps?

RAFAEL NADAL: No. I don't have this feeling, especially when probably the practice week, the week before, yes. But for the weather conditions, the weather was, you know, cold, humid, was cloudy all day. That makes the ball slower, and that's makes the ball much bigger.

Today start the good weather. Good hot over there, and the ball went faster from the racquet. The weather makes a lot of changes on the conditions especially on the ball.

Q. Was it perhaps because of the weather that you felt you needed a bit more strapping on your leg, extra protection?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, that's not the reason, no? I gonna do because I think, you know, doing this band there, I don't want to create mystery or nothing. I gonna say what happened.

I had a fantastic week of practice with nothing of pain, no one bad feeling on the knee and no one place on my body. So I was really, really happy with everything.

But yesterday afternoon happened the more strange thing ever happen to me. I was sitting on a chair in the hotel. I felt like a crack on the knee, but is nothing really strange. Happens lot of time with articulation, movement, articulation. Nothing strange.

I stand up. I felt the knee a little bit strange. I moved the leg like this two times to try to find the feeling. After the second time, the knee stays with an unbelievable pain completely straight. I really couldn't move the knee like this (indicating just a little bit). I have no movement on the knee.

I have a hard afternoon. I did all the tests. Came here for ultrasound. Went to hospital for MRI. I just can say thank you very much to the tournament for all the facilities give to me on a Sunday. Not easy to find places, and they make fantastic work for me. So I just can say thanks to them.

And, seriously, yesterday during the evening I wasn't hundred percent sure I would have chance to play, because with the movement of that knee I felt that I will not be able to play.

I did a lot of treatment. The MRI was positive. Nothing wrong shows the MRI. So that's always a lot of calm. But still the knee, you know, with the pain.

Finally what happened is with the movement, articulation, probably pinch maybe the tendon little bit or something that put the tendon completely straight.

That's why yesterday we did a lot of work during the evening. At the end of the night with a lot of pain, but I finally really had the full movement of the knee. I wake up today morning with a little bit better feeling. I did all the treatment. I was all the day doing the treatment.

I started the match with a little bit of scare at the beginning, and nervous because I was really disappointed yesterday. But, you know, after the first 10 games that was scare, I started to play with normal conditions.

The best thing is I felt the knee very well. So is something that I really don't understand why happened everything, but I am really happy that today I was ready to play and I played a fantastic match.

Q. What sort of treatment did you get on your knee?

RAFAEL NADAL: Is really strange, because you can have feeling like this, because you have bad movement, aggressive movement playing. Nothing like that happened. So I did a lot of physiotherapy with my physio trying to relax everything. Antiinflammatories, a lot. Local antiinflammatories. Everything. Tried to, you know, take the pain out.

Q. As usual, hard courts are a very punishing surface to play tennis.

RAFAEL NADAL: But that wasn't the case.

Q. I'm just saying, to play seven matches potentially on a hard court in two weeks is asking a lot, or that should be okay as long as you feel the way you feel?

RAFAEL NADAL: Sorry, but I have good hopes. You can have an injury playing an aggressive movement. But sitting on a chair, you cannot have injury. So that's why I really keep not understand what's going on.

But I understand when the knee comes back to the right place, you know, and we are able to relax that. So I was much more scared about the first match than the rest, because today now I have 48 hours to the next match.

So I am really confident that having the worst feeling that I ever had in my knee yesterday and today was able to play. I have fantastic hope that gonna happen the same for after tomorrow.

Q. Have you had a chance to speak to Roger, following your comments yesterday, regarding the problems on the tour?

RAFAEL NADAL: No. But, anyway, probably yesterday what I said I said. Probably I am wrong telling that to you, especially because these things can stay, must stay in the locker room.

I always had fantastic relationship with Roger. I still have fantastic relationship with Roger. That's what should be, in my opinion. Don't create crazy histories about what I said yesterday, please.

Just I said, because, you know, we can have different views about how the tour need to work. That's all.

Q. Did the top four players get together on Sunday after the players' meeting on Saturday?

RAFAEL NADAL: No.

Q. Do you plan to speak to Roger soon to try to explain what you meant yesterday, maybe to apologize?

RAFAEL NADAL: No. You know, what I said I said. I feel sorry for say that, especially to you. Because when I say that, I have to say him personally. But that's it. Forget.

I do not talk anymore. During the two weeks, you can try very hard to asking me a lot of things. Yesterday, you know, I started, and I say I don't want to talk anymore about this. Finally I talked to much as usual. That's not gonna happen again.

I advise all of you. You can try hard, but I gonna talk about tennis. If I am here two weeks, if I am here two days, I gonna have less work.

THE MODERATOR: Any more questions?

RAFAEL NADAL: After that... You are only interested in that, not the tennis (smiling).

Knees can be tricky I know that personally. People think Rafa is just getting an excuse ready, but I know for a fact my knees can be hurting me and then they feel fine again. I don't play tennis so I don't have all the tests or treatment that he does. The pain can and will just come and go. But bad knees and tennis especially on hard courts is not a good combination! So I hope that knee is all right now

Quote:
Hotel worker arrested in theft of Nadal's $375,000 watch
By Barbara De Lollis, USA TODAY Updated

An employee at a five-star hotel in Paris was charged earlier this week in the hotel-room theft of a jewel-encrusted watch worth more money than many people's homes.

The watch - worth about $375,000 - belonged to Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal, who had left it behind while playing the French Open.

Watchmaker Richard Mille had let Nadal borrow the timepiece for the French Open, which he won on Monday for a record seventh time.

Police suspected an inside job, since the suite hadn't been forcibly entered and only Nadal, his parents and girlfriend had a key, London's Telegraph says.

Ultimately, a 38-year-old bartender at the hotel was arrested after he was identified via a magnetic key card used to access the room.

The man confessed and the absurdly expensive watch was recovered.

What Hotel Check-In can't figure out is how the hotel managed to remain unidentified in all the stories. Don't police reports in Paris cite location of the reported incident?

The Telegraph calls it a "five-star hotel in the chic eighth arrondissement."

London's Daily Mail calls it a "five-star luxury Paris hotel."

The Associated Press refers to it the "luxury hotel in Paris' 8th district."

France's AFP refers to it as "a hotel."

I don't know about you, but if I was traveling with expensive jewelry, I'd want to know which hotel let this happen.

Nadal, however, apparently doesn't feel the same way.

According to the AFP, he praised the police for doing their job and also praised the hotel - though not by name.

"I cannot say anything wrong about the hotel. They were great for me every time I was there, for the last, I think, eight years. I'll be back in the hotel next year," Nadal said.
This story says Rafa was sleeping in the room when thief entered.

Rafael Nadal's Stolen Richard Mille Watch Found
Paige Reddinger, Forbes Staff

Spain's Rafael Nadal celebrates winning against compatriot Nicolas Almagro during their men's quarter-final in the French Open tennis championship at the Roland Garros stadium, on June 2, 2010, in Paris. Second seed Rafael Nadal of Spain reached the semi-finals of the French Open with a 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 win over compatriot Nicolas Almagro. (Image credit: AFP via @daylife)

Rafael Nadal‘s big win at the French Open was overshadowed by a big loss, when his $376,000 Richard Mille RM027 tourbillon watch went missing on Tuesday from his suite at a five-star Parisian luxury hotel. The watch, which was recovered yesterday, was found to be in the possession of the hotel’s barman. The alleged thief was tracked down when police traced his hotel access badge, which was used to gain entry to Nadal’s suite where the tennis champion was sleeping during the act. When questioned the barman led the police to the train tracks near his home in Essonne, France where he had hidden the watch.

This isn’t the first time Nadal has lost a Mille. In 2008, his even pricier, custom built $525,000 Richard Mille went missing from the locker room during a match at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. Unfortunately, that one was never recovered.
Poor Rafa He can’t hold on to these watches.

thanks Star for the article, but i don't like this watch stuff. First, i love our rafa to remain low-profile, no need to wear such an expensive watch, especially for playing tennis matches, not convenient to play with this watch. According to my experience, i think you would gonna be more free if your hands are without any "burden". Also, this watch company is really a miser, why they only "lend" and not "give" this watch to Rafa ?

It’s a good thing they don’t give him the watches!

Probably Rafa would rather be paid money for the endorsement than have the super expensive watches. I mean $500,000 for a watch? That’s crazy stuff.

I think it would be unsettling to know that someone entered your hotel suite while you were sleeping and took something.

I think it would be unsettling to know that someone entered your hotel suite while you were sleeping and took something.
i really dont understand this endorsement of watch stuff, i guess they paid him a lot more money than the price of this watch right? If so, why not to give the watch to him too? Whats more, this watch is going to wear down soon since it is being used while playing tennis (lots of sweat/dirt will emerge), so if they get them back one day, the watch is already valueless

Epic movies, like brokeback mountain, are seldom found in the industry or worthy for the mainstream viewer. As often as I have watched the clips of this movie, I always find something more to it. For one, the gay stuff doesn't enter the picture for me, only the dimension of the highest love I have ever witnessed in life or on film.

yes, this is horrible, not only for the security of the hotel, but piggy rafa who sleeps soundly like a piggy, how could he not discover that someone had entered his room and stole his watch?
