Default Why are there no great tennis movies?

Seems like every sport has their standout movie. I just saw Rush and I know next to nothing about F1 racing but it was a well done movie that respected the sport. Basketball/soccer/football/baseball/golf/boxing/horse racing/hockey all have tons and tons of movies. But we can't have even one decent tennis movie? surely there is some story worth telling that would be good for the silver screen?

If you were a filmmaker which tennis story would you tell on screen?

also why isn't there a great tennis movie out there?

I'm guessing that there isn't the "thrill of near death" in tennis. Nor the tough guy beat you to a pulp stuff like in boxing and football that can draw even non-fans of the sport in.

Andre Agassi's career would make a good tennis story if it was commissioned.

It had nearly everything. Being forced into the sport by an overly controlling father against his will, hating it, being forced to attend the Bollettieri academy against his will and acting out there, underachieving at first during his pro career and initially hating Wimbledon, eventually getting his act together to rise to the top of the sport, dating a famous Hollywood actress, getting distracted and plummeting down the rankings, doing drugs, rising from the ashes to reach the top again, dating a legendary female player etc.

Certainly not too many other great players had as interesting a ride as that.

I think one of the reasons is that it's tough to simulate/act tennis in a believable way. Most of the time when people play tennis in movies/TV shows, their technique is cringeworthy. It's worse if they are trying to pass off as good or great players.

Having said that "Match point" isn't exactly a tennis movie but it features some tennis and it's a great movie.

Somewhere out there, there is a homeless person who once took betting advice from GSMnadal

I think Ferrer has ruined the image of tennis around the world hence the lack of interest from big companies in hollywood

This.

Agassi's life and career would make a great movie (his book was amazing).

Would like to see one over Pancho Gonzales too. One who was not white, smoked and drunk, banged Gals and still won a lot of Grand Slams would have made an interesting watch.

a movie on a guy who struggles on the futures circuit would be much more interesting and would have more drama.

that could be good. Show him struggling and barely making any money, then maybe mid-movie have a slight breakthrough and then falls back to reality.
