Which Grand Slam produces the best matches?
Which Grand Slam produces the best matches?
Let's examinate this with a few examples of great matches:
-In the Australian Open, there have been incredible classics in the last 5 years, especially:
2000: Agassi def. Sampras
2001: Agassi def. Rafter and Clement def. Grosjean
2002: Safin def. Sampras
2003: Roddick def. El Aynaoui
2004: Safin def. Roddick and Safin def. Agassi
2005: Hewitt def. Nadal, Hewitt def. Nalbandian, Safin def. Federer
-In Roland Garros, there are always a lot of 4-5 sets matches, sometimes totally unbelievable !!
1999: Agassi def. Medvedev
2000: Kuerten def. Kafelnikov, Kuerten def. Ferrero, Kuerten def. Norman
2001: Kuerten def. Russell
2004: Santoro def. Clement and Gaudio def. Coria
-In Wimbledon, there are fewer exciting 5 setters, but we can remember some of the all-time greats:
2000: Rafter def. Agassi
2001: Rafter def. Agassi and Ivavisevic def. Rafter
-In the US Open, the crowd and the atmosphere contribute a lot to make some awesome matches:
2001: Sampras def. Agassi and Hewitt def. Roddick
2003: Roddick def. Nalbandian
2004: Federer def. Agassi
My vote goes to the Australian Open, Roland Garros a close second !

I thought the Rafter matches at Wimbledon were so awesome, so just on that I'll say Wimbledon. There was also that Borg-McEnroe match a quarter-century ago which was quite epic.

Re: Which Grand Slam produces the best matches?
Although it is a fairly biased opinion, my pick is the Aussie Open...
Mainly because I get to see alot more of the AO than the other slams, and also because when I've been watching these epics, it's been in prime time, whereas we've never gotten the French Open on free-to-air, and Wimbledon/USO are late night/early morning affairs
definitely in the last 2 years though, it has produced some of the best matches, and the nature & atmosphere of the tournament certainly cant hurt

and my favorite:
97:Kuerten def. MUster, KAfelnikov, Medved 3 5-setters in a row!
RG produces the best matches without any doubt for me.

Re: Which Grand Slam produces the best matches?
I think it comes in spells. In the late 70s/early 80s it was the US Open but by the mid 80s it began to shift to Wimbledon. Once Pete took over there, it became hit-or-miss everywhere. Now, however, I think the AO is producing the highest quality matches throughout the rounds.

Re: Which Grand Slam produces the best matches?
for me it's all about what sort of tennis (surface) you like in the first place.. I prefer Roland Garros simply because it's the gravel grand slam.. after that I'd say Australian Open (the crowds are always great IMO.. least biased of all Slam audiences even maybe).. then Wimbledon and US Open comes last

Wimbledom. I loved those Edberg-Becker matches, and Invanisevic winning there...
