ATP feels that longer rallies and matches = more fans, therefore = more money.

^^ Cause they want money. Slower surfaces ... less changes in the mug top of the game ... less surprizes ... and so on and so on...

Clay courts, specially Roland Garros, is faster than ever. And we need some slow hard court events. Maybe not enough ultrafast court events but well mates, it's the market which wants so. You can complain like a bunch of commie hipsters but markets are going to be relentless as always

Maybe people got tired of 2 metres/6,5 feets guys who only knew serve and eventually hit his forehand just after.

Fast clay courts just show how ATP wants to homogenize the game. There are two surfaces that should've been left where they were, grass and clay, the two natural surfaces. HC could then be adjusted to be between them, I'm mainly against surface homogenization but I think '90s HC were too fast on average. I think USO and AO had the correct pace between '03 and '07.

On one side of this debate we have people who want surface variety. People who want clay courts to be as slow as they used to be and are perfectly happy for the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami and several smaller events to be on slow hard courts. Strangely enough we also want grass to be quick and some hard courts also to be quick (not just Cinci)and some to be at medium pace. It would also be nice to have a few indoor events played on carpet again.

On the other side of this debate we have people who are happy for almost all courts to play at relatively similar speeds, presumably because it suits there favourite players or because they have no understanding of the rich history of tennis. These people frequently and falsely accuse the other side of wanting a tour that would be dominated by serve-bots.

Tennis was better when there were more, or rather, any* fast and low bouncing courts. Fed's defensive backhand 'flicks' were sublime. But with the ridiculously high bounce these days, any attempts at flicks would probably just result in the ball landing in the stands.

* Obviously an exaggeration to illustrate the severe lack of such courts.

It's slow because of the balls, not surface.

Problem with extreme low or fast surfaces is that promote specialists with a monotonous style, zero variety and very predictable tactics. Tennis fans like those matches where they can see a bit of all and players can and even must to show some complex and varied tactics. And mixed surfaces allow these scenarios. People don't like to watch two single tricky ponies playing for three fucking hours in each round. Homogenization of surfaces is a trade-off between 'macrovariety' and 'microvariety'.

It piss me off the monotonous and simplistic point of view with people usually address this issue, at least in this site.
