Tennis is more and more about who has the best stamina, and not about who has the best tennis skills. The pendulum has swung so much further on the physical conditioning aspect.

I don't know if anybody's posted this here before but Nadal last summer was the first RG/Wimbledon champ since himself in 2005 not to reach SF in the other event. Actually, it was the first time since 2005 when RG champ didn't make the Wimbledon final. 2004 was the last year when both players who won RG and Wimbledon didn't reach the SF of the other event. Federer in 2005 was the first player to win either Wimbledon or RG and reach the semi of the other since Agassi in 1999 when he won RG and reached Wimbledon final. And the last man before Agassi to do that was Becker in 1989 reching RG SF and winning Wimbledon.

So, it used to be much more difficult to succeed on both clay and grass until mid-00s. Surface homogenization would be a logical explanation for why it's so much easier nowadays.

So, ATP has real intention to slow down the courts and is doing it through these years

or not?

Interesting article by Peter Bodo.

Uncomfortable Questions: Grass Stain - Was it a mistake for Wimbledon to slow down the grass?

From the article:

"The only real stunner in recent years was Lukas Rosol’s upset of Nadal in the second round last year. I don’t care how much Nadal’s knees hurt in that one; it’s obvious that Rosol basically blasted him off the court with groundstrokes the likes of which we haven’t seen since. I don’t think it would hurt the game at all to have at least one of the Big Four smacked down before the first week is out this year as well."

Totally agree.

That is how a player like Ferrer can have so much success.

Söderling was asked about the Wimbledon courts on Swedish Eurosport a few days ago. He said that 10 years ago the courts at Wimbledon were much "worse" but that they had improved significantly in recent years. "Now they bounce much better, almost plays like hard-court" he said.

I agree with him that the change has been for the better. If you want to speed up courts, focus on AO, Indian Wells, Miami and Toronto instead.

Fed's presser after beating Hyung-Taik Lee in 1R of Wim 2003.

Interesting he mentions the harder courts with the higher bounce (that some people seem to pretend didn't happen).
Also pretty hilarious how he says it got harder to serve/volley on second serve and how he had to play from the baseline 'a little'.
Times have changed.

I'm not sure that grass playing like a HC is a good thing. Grass should be low-bouncing.

Of course it was a mistake for Wimbledon to slow down the grass, now we have glorified clay court specialists like Nadal who have two Wimby titles and slow hardcourt grinders like Grindertardovic who can barely move on the green but managed to sneak a Wimby title against the aforementioned glorified clay court specialist who happens to be his pigeon bitch.

Wimbledon 2011 final was a disgrace to tennis.

I'm not convinced that the actual court is much slower. The ball still moves through the court well. It's really a combination of the bounce and the balls, I think. The bounce is noticeably higher and with more consistency, it makes defense that much more effective. And it's the balls that are obviously sluggish through the air that make it play slower.

Early Wimbledon = best time of the year.

You just know Nadal would've routed Darcis and looked like he was in fine form if this was a slow HC like IW or Miami.
