Default Auckland Heineken Open R1: Struff upsets Dominic Thiem 6-7 6-4 6-3

Just utter clownery throughout from Thiem, expecting little more than a first round exit for him at AO. $1.30 favourite for this match he was.

Struff did what he had to do, but Thiem was poor throughout.

Theim needs to work on his fitness.

Should have been straight sets.

Wasn't expecting this at all. Thiem wasn't clicking just like last season.

Thiem is quite bad right now, forehand is a mess and his serve attackable, he's slicing his backhand way too much too.

Has lost 6 of his last 8 matches

Well, I reckon we can write off Thiem until the clay season, he looks sickly. Barely prepared because of dropping nine kg in the off-season, which literally made him sick. It sucks, because after last year's infection he was off for the entire second half of the season, which I hoped he would recover from in the off-season. But another setback followed.

A pity, but not that unexpected. Odds @1,30? I saw @1,60, which is more reasonable.

Really hoping he'll be physically OK for a while so he can build himself up again.

According to Bresnik he had a very rough off-season. He had to fulfill an army duty, and got sick soon after arriving in Spain, had to pull out of Doha because of it. . Apparently he only really started training since he got to Auckland.

I saw him at 1.6 too. Maybe 1.3 with the set lead in play. Both of these players are good friends on tour so never going to be much in it.

How did he manage to lose 9kg? Because of army duty?

No, it was a conscious decision in order to improve his footwork, he had help from a nutritionist.

That game at 4-4 in the 2nd set was

He should have won it in two
In the third set he didn't care much - he didn't move anymore in the last 3 games

Congrats to Struff though, he hit some good shots today!

Struff is in solid form, the odds before the match were strangely inaccurate.

Anywho, don't go over the moon with expectations about Domi, it feels as his career will develop like Dimitrov's - slowly, step by step, few positions in the rankings per year, good wins, but also bad losses.

Guys with complete game as these two (not relying on one huge weapon) are doomed to have it this way.

This is not an upset. I predicted Struff to win in fill in the draw and he's a dangerous player to guys the level of Thiem. Let's not forget that Thiem had a weird off season. Before the match they interviewed bresnik and said Thiem didn't even start training properly until arriving in Auckland as he had army service and then was sick during Spain training camp
