The tension of this match was so high! I was so excited watching the match in front of the TV.
High quality from both players. At the tiebreak, Richard didn't play that good, and Roger kept his consistency to win it 7-1.
Richard was on fire and actually outplayed Roger..... Hitting return winners on both Roger's 1st and 2nd serves, and hitting winners from both wings during the rallies. On the other hand, Roger began to commit more and more unforced errors from his forehand. Richard winning it 6-2.
What a set! Richard kept the ball rolling and leading 3-0. Then, Richard was serving for the match at 5-3, having his first matchpoint but missed an easy forehand drive volley. Roger kept his calm, and once again showing his champion quality..... broke back and serving at 4-5 to level the match. However, Richard had his 2nd matchpoint at Roger's service game at 5-4... Roger hung in there tough and eventually holding his service game and level the match at 5-5.
Final set went on to decide in a tiebreak. Roger was in the upper hand, having 3 matchpoints at 6-5, 7-6 and 8-7 but unable to convert any of them. He looked nervous, missing his 1st serves and his forehand shots at those matchpoints. Richard then came up with another gear, level the tiebreak at 8-8, and hitting an aggressive off forehand right on the line to have his 3rd matchpoint at 9-8. Roger tried to serve to hold his next point, going to the net after a forehand approach, but this time Richard came up with an amazing backhand down the line passing shot and won the match!
The match was definitely one of the most exciting matches in 2005!
It's a tough loss for Roger, after doing all the hardwork to come back and level the match, and having 3 matchpoints!
But, in a positive perspective, he may feel less pressure now, and work harder on clay to set his eyes on the French Open trophy.
Richard Gasquet.... full credits to him to play such an amazing match!
As a 18yo, he actually handled himself very well on court.... particulary after leading 5-2, and waste 2 matchpoints..... most players at this situation may already broke a few racquets and outbursting all the time!!!!
