Default Most consecutive wins

Well we've done the consecutive weeks at #1 thread so I thought this should be done too. I went back and tried a search and didn't come up with any specific hits relating to this, so I thought I'd throw this out there.

Considering Federer has a 24 match winning streak currently going I thought it was a good time to bring it up. I'm not sure where this ranks all-time.

I know that people talk of Vilas having a crazy streak, and Muster had some sort of streak of 40+ I think in '95, I vaguely remember Sampras having had a streak near 30.

If anyone has any specific info etc, please post.

What's crazy is that Federer now has had a streak of 23, 24 (and counting) and 26 all since last year's French Open. That's just unreal.

I think Muster had a 35-match win streak in 1995.

Vilas has the open-era winning streak record of 50 matches (in 1977). His streak, begun after Wimbledon, was stopped at Aix-en-Provence in September by Ilie Nastase, who used one of the controversial "spaghetti" rackets that produced weird strokes and bounces. Vilas quit in disgust; such rackets were shortly banned.
And then he won another something like 38 matches, so it would have been close to 90 straight matches. He kept winning right up until Borg beat him in the Masters at the Madison Square Garden.

Yeah, I remember Vilas talking about his record as well. He said he won like 50 matches in a row, till Nastase (I think) beat him when he played with a racket with double cords, and then won 48 more matches I have no idea how to check this!

I didn't do anything... just cut and paste from a couple of Vilas' bios.

Oh, and I remember about that interview too.

Interesting, maybe a few of Vilas' wins weren't at ATP events, hence the disparity in that Tennis-X stat... of course, they don't include Federer's longest winning streak of 26 matches, which surpasses Courier and ties with Agassi in third place.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Now it should be:

[b]WINNING STREAKS SINCE 1990

Player Matches
1. Thomas Muster 35 (1995)
2. Pete Sampras 29 (1994)
3.Roger Federer 26 (2004-2005)
3. Andre Agassi 26 (1995)
5. Jim Courier 25 (1992)
6.Roger Federer 24 (2005 and counting)
6. Pete Sampras 24 (1999)
8. Roger Federer 23 (2004)

Federer has had more +20 (maybe +23) winning streaks in 9 months than Sampras had in his whole career. Doesn't mean much except that Federer's dominance the last year has been something exceptional.

Of course he won't, unless he's planning on playing another 12 matches this week rather than the required 4 to seal the title.

He will, but unfurtunately Rome may be too much...

Unless he takes a break and continues the streak in Hamburg and Roland Garros, Halle and then wimbledon for a total of 53 consecutive wins.... .

If Federer wouldn't have lost against Safin he would probably have 52 straight matches by now...
